balance and technique at the same time, not many players could produce a goal like that

I don't think he was even looking towards the goal as it went flying off his shin.

Same as Gazza's goal against Scotland (Euro 96).... somehow he luckily flicks it over Colin Hendry.... the ball goes over Hendry's head... it's dropping.... Gazza stumbles.... toe pokes it with his eyes close...... "took a chance" and woah... it went in! how lucky!

Bale is already showing potential to become truly world class, so difficult to play against when the team are playing well. Such a good footballer AND athlete too. Really interesting how he linked with Lennon in the build up for both goals, so difficult for the defenders with Lennon threatening by cutting inside and Bale making a blind side run. Lennon's passes on both occasions were spot on. I can't see how defenders are going to cope with Bale when they can't double team due to the threat of Lennon. Who needs strikers when Bale is on song?

As much as I love the goal. those who are decalring it the ultimate evidence of skill are wide of the mark IMO. I think its a lucky goal. A "take a chance" goal.

NO WAY! You can see he's aming for the top right, striking across the ball for right to left swerve with dip. His arms are counterbalancing his body to keep upper body balance while falling away to the side as he hits it and he even ends up pointing where he's aiming.

In short - he was trying to place the ball exactly where he did in exactly the way he did - truely brilliant goal. Incredibly hard shot to take on like that and executed it to perfection. Genius!

bullshit, he meant to pass it back to lennon but sliced it.

in all seriousness, one of the best goals i've ever seen live in the flesh, for any team. i ended up on the stairs and two rows in front celebrating

Even 'Arry said there might not be a better goal this season. Praise indeed.

Not going to live this one down am I?:silenced:

Haha, good sport!

It's clear what you're getting at though. Although Bale meant the shot and executed it perfectly, if he tried the same shot ten times how many times would it result in a goal? Hell, how many times would it be on target? But as others have said, that's probably true of many goals.

I'm just pleased that Bale has the confidence to try a shot like that. Genuine belief in his own (fantastic) ability...priceless.

True - but thats true of almost all great goals. The real secret is being able to act instinctively without letting the conscious mind interfere and cripple the brains ability to do amazing things on autopilot. If doubt or any other interfering thought creeps in for even a split second you'll fail to execute. That kind of in the zone, zen-like perfection only comes from a deep seated belief in your own ability and technique. Young Gareth is finally starting to play with the sort of self-belief that means he can take on shots like that without thinking "this is probably a one in ten effort right here" - his confidence levels are sky high & that means not only will he take on shots like that - he'll take them on without even consciously thinking about it & will therefore be able to execute with alarming regularity.

Pundits talk about confidence all the time - but IMHO - thats the actual mechanism at work that makes confidence a totally game tranforming factor. Its not confidence per-se, just a lack of doubting thought to interfere with what a gifted athelete's brain does instinctively when if its left to its own devices.

ps. obviously not talking from personal experience here ;-)
