An agreement to agree? Well they are certainly legally enforceable, and not at all a complete load of arse.

This sort of thing can't happen. It could be a gentleman's agreement between the two clubs but why would Portsmouth want to do that? They're performing better than us and have the same ambitions as us, it doesn't make sense.

Thanks for passing on the info, though, PLP.

The reason for their big loss was partly wage levels but I think I heard they massively increased the squad in that period so more to do with that. I don't think they're in the realms of the Bar codes or Spammers wage levels yet.

If (repeat if) Diarra wanted to come to Tottenham in January but was prepared to wait until July while getting first team football, surely all that would be needed would be a buy-out clause in his contract with Portsmouth. That's no guarantee that he would still want to come to Tottenham come the summer, but it's hardly unconventional.

And as others have pointed out, it is consistent with Diarra's comments when he signed for Portsmouth, the rumours that Tottenham were interested, the rumours that Arsenal were unwilling to sell him to Tottenham though they were willing to let him go, and the bargain price that defoe was sold for.

I've seen a bit of Diarra at Pompey and he's a good player but I'm not convinced he's right for us.

Whilst I have no doubt he would improve our defensive stability I don't think he would be good for us going the other way. Reason being he likes to dwell in possesion, he loves being on the ball and rarely uses it quickly and I'm not convinced that this would suit our style especially if we play with 2 more orthodox wide men next season as they need quick service to be at their most effective.

Good player but not convinced he would be a good signing.

They needed Defoe alot more than they needed Diarra, as they have plenty of midfielders and a lack of firepower. Therefore this deal would have been beneficial for both parties. Defoe seems like a shrewd bit of business from Arry. He knows him well and obviously knew he could get the best out of him. If this story is true I would imagine Arry enquired about Defoe and then we suggested this cheeky little bit of business.

Over the years there have been loads of comments from 'Arry, and Redknapp Jr, about Defoe being a "goal machine", and of course he "mentored" him at West Ham etc.

My sense is that 'Arry would have done pretty much anything to get Defoe in his team. Given Pompey is probably his last job in football (having turned down the Barcodes to stay in his south coast mansion), he may well have been prepared to risk bad blood with the goons to sign old Shift-and-Shoot.

Also, the Benjani element to the Defoe deal was truly farcical - I remember watching on Sky Sports as his chauffeur driven car zoomed in to Man City's training ground at 11pm on deadline day to start his medical. That was about cash flow. And remember that, for reasons we were assured were all entirely kosher, it later turned out that Defoe's deal was actually a loan - at least initially.

Dirty 'Arry would be more likely to doublecross us. The only reason we sold him Mendes, Davis and Pamarot for 7mil was that we had a gentlemans agreement on buying Matty Taylor. If anyone remembers that we were heavily linked with him at the time, and he was all but our player according to dirty harry. Rumours persisted till deadline day but Dirty 'Arry went back on his word.

I want this to happen just for the laughs.

And if it does, can we send the cheque for Diarra's transfer fee straight to Wenger and the goons, tastefully wrapped in a brown paper bag...

(With the appropriate adjustment via Defoe's, ahem, "transfer fee".)

All allegedly & hypothetically, of course.

this has to happen now

had dinner with a well respected football agent on the weekend who has a big in at ar5ena1 and he told me to watch what happens with diarra this summer.

apparently we came to an agreement with portsmouth that they sign diarra and sell him to us this summer as ar5ena1 refused to deal direct. In return we sold them defoe

dont shoot the messenger if not correct but he also said berbatov would not be going anywhere!
I'm not ridiculing the ITK, I just find it hilarious.

As posted by others i remember reading that Diarra said he see's signing for Pompy as a stepping stone to a bigger club. Hope its true but must admit that the bit about Berby is better news.

Right now, it's debatable (at least, if you live on the South Coast) as to the accuracy of Spurs being a bigger club (this season) than Pompey.

Its not entirely inconceivable, Ole Harry does have connections with the club and we have certainly put alot of business his way (Mendes and Davies played a big part in keeping Pompey up that year)

If making such an arrangement also meant he could get Defoe Im sure Harry the wheeler dealer would be up for such an opportunity.

**doesnt Redknapp co own a race horse with someone on our board??***

True or not its a more interesting piece of ITK then most

Kemsley and Harry and the clown from Newcastle have 2 horses between them.

Remember what happened to the last south coast club with delusions of grandeur?

I find it hard to believe Harry Redknapp would ever be involved in wheeler dealing of this kind.:whistle:

By the way isn't it delicious that the kind of player arsenal needed to stop their season disintigrating is someone like ...Diarra and they had him until January..wenger pure genious.
