His dad has had little or nothing to do with him since he was very young and his mum gave him up to a foster family when he was 13 to help him turn pro because she knew she wasn't resourceful enough to be anything other than a hindrance to him.

He's not ashamed and he told you the reason. He has little affiliation to his father although I don't want to go into detail but unless something happened very recently his father has always been in his life all be it not in person.
