Harry Kane will change his number again, this time to no. 9.

If so, for the club's sake I hope it's announced before the new kit comes out. I can imagine there will be hundreds of 'KANE 10' shirts that will be printed on release which they'll have to reimburse.

Yeah 5 should always be a centre back number with 4 and 6 then being either a defender or midfielder (not them both being same position if you know what I mean).

So whilst I'm glad 4 and 5 are our first choice centre backs I would prefer ideally that Toby take 6 and (controversy alert!) Dier takes number 4.

Wanyama depends on what numbers are vacated as said above (6, 8 or 12 currently could or could not be available).

But to be honest I'm just still happy Kane took no.10 last summer :love:

In recent seasons we've tidied our numbers up nicely with Walker finally taking 2 (as was concerned he'd stick with 28 for 'luck' reasons like that plum Luke Shaw giving up number 3 for 23, which I think is a bit weak), Rose getting 3, Lloris getting 1, Kane getting 10 as aforementioned, Bentaleb 6 and Mason 8 before they perhaps didn't meet the standards this season they'd previously met etc.

I agree. Whenever I'm numbering players on Fifa, etc. I'm really obsessive about getting it right. Some formations it's obvious, others it's a fucking nightmare.

Are there any decent articles or similar explaining the history of numbering systems? I imagine they differ from country to country, but I've never been able to find anything solid and have always been curious.

I assume, at least in England, that our "peculiar" system (3 5 6 2) is rooted in the old centre half system.

Both 5 and more often 6 are traditionally used by defensive midfielders in other parts of the word.
4 is often a central defender.
Some even start with 2 as right back and just continue with the player to his left at the next number.
Lots of variations.

Probably minimal changes. There's too many commercial reasons why it's not good for players to needlessly change:

1 Hugo Lloris
2 Kyle Walker
3 Danny Rose
4 Toby Alderweireld
5 Jan Vertonghen
6 Nabil Bentaleb
7 Heung-Min Son
8 Ryan Mason
9 Vincent Janssen
10 Harry Kane
11 Erik Lamela
12 Victor Wanyama
13 Michel Vorm
14 Clinton Njie
15 Eric Dier
16 Kieran Trippier
17 Josh Onomah
18
19 Mousa Dembele
20 Dele Alli
21 Harry Winks
22 Luke McGee
23 Christian Eriksen
24 Cameron Carter-Vickers
25
26
27 Kevin Wimmer
28
29
30
31
32
33 Ben Davies

I think Winks, Onomah and McGee will be given lower number shirts, and 2CV given one this season. I think the 18 might be kept in reserve for now.

The wikipedia article on squad number is pretty good. If you can't be arsed then basically back in the bad old days you had 2 and three at "full back" - which was essentially centre back. 4,5,6 were the centre halves or midfielders and then the other numbers were forwards. When the modern 4 at the back formations were developed, different countries moved different centre half positions back into centre back and the full backs moved out wide (except in Brazil where 6 became a left back) thus you have different countries having different generic number conventions.

I'm not too obsessive with numbers, I quite like 4-5-6 in centre mid or anywhere in defense (not at R or L mid, that's just perverse). The only thing that really annoys me is when a midfielder or winger is given 9. Probably because I grew up watching Shearer and Ronaldo.

Only #5 was the centre-half in the old-fashioned 2-3-5 formation. 4 and 6 were the wing-halves (wing-halves and inside forwards being loosely the forerunners of midfielders).

Apparently, Bill Shankly used to put a midfielder in the #5 jersey in the days when 2-3-5 was being phased out and the game was losing the traditional wingers, and so on, because it would throw other teams. Instead of concentrating on where a particular player went, and what he did, teams would fixate on his jersey number. Not rocket science, is it? Back in the early 1980s, some Spurs players wore often numbers that didn't tally with their positions, but the reply was that the team used numbers to identify individuals rather than positions. Like you, I'm not too worried about which number a particular player wears. The team and the club have more important things to concentrate on.

In the early 80s the number 9 shirt was worn predominantly by winger Tony Galvin I recall. Archibald and Crooks - the strikeforce, not SC's enforcer in chief - wore 8 and 11. (Whether our own @Archibald&Crooks wears two shirts is pure speculation and a matter for him, Mrs A&C and the many residents of the ITK ban and torture broom cupboard :cautious:)

I'm sure there was a pic a few days ago with Wanyama meeting some Kenyan spurs supporters group and they gave him a birthday cake which was a number 12 shirt. Or did I dream that?! Been a number of things suggesting 12. Be very surprised if Yedlin is 12 next season (or even in the squad) another year on loan at Sunderland would be my guess.

Do we think that the club release the new ones before the first game or confirm them at the close of the transfer window?
