what do you mean "honoured their end of the deal?"
What I mean is that a team in the lower leagues taking on a teenager from the PL, it is very clear that the reason they are there is to get minutes, start games and develop as players and as men too…

you see it so often though where the stakes involved in the lower leagues mean that managers often stick to the “old reliable” options and you see these teenagers make cameos here and there, and finish a season having only made 2-6 starts and made 10 appearances from the bench.

Port Vale have given Devine every angle to succeed, starting him, allowing him to develop and to make mistakes too! I mean already after half a season of the platform they gave him he seemed to outgrow that challenge and needed a new one.

I can only imagine the conversation between clubs extends to what they expect from the signing club in terms of playing their academy product in meaningful minutes, and from that end, I think PV have acted admirably!

it doesn't work like that mate. there are no guaranteed minutes written into a contract or verbally. the idea is that the player goes there and earns his place in the team just like everybody else, but the reality is that these 'precious' kids are often not as good as we think they are. hence we often see them drop out the football league once they're released. if the loan works out they get a promising youngster, he gets experience.

having grown up with many pro footballers (prem to league 1) they often said once they leave the comfort of their home clubs, they compete against men with mortgages and many kids simply struggle.

I think Spurs have changed the way loans are set up. Spurs now pay their salary whilst on loan on the basis they play. No play the loan club pays the salary. Don’t ask me how it works but I have heard it from a number posters and it was confirmed by John Wenham on the podcast Last Word on Spurs. I think John is @Lilywhite Rose. Well worth a listen.

I think this a good incentive we need some feeder clubs

it must be hard for the kids men’s football is a shock, it must really bring some to earth

it also make some realise they don’t like playing professional football, the pressure kills the fun, the crowd can be brutal, the physicality etc.

Players need to earn their place. No point playing them just because we are paying the wages.
They need to be under pressure to perform .

Saw Bent and Huddlestone on Talksport recently discussing the benefit of the reserves league back in the day and how it helped the transition for many of the u21's into men's football.

Many of the top European leagues has a similar league or have a B team that play men's league football in lower divisions with the possibility of promotion / relegation.

I remember reading up on the reserves match reports back in the day on Spurs Odyssey when the likes of Taarabt and Dervite were there.

Keeley starts again for Barnet, 0-2 loss to Oldham (both penalties) and from the sounds of it he made several very good saves to prevent it from being worse.

I used to live close to Brisbane Road in the days when Spurs reserves played there. Those games could be absolutely brutal on the young players - I got the impression that the stiffs didn’t like playing on a cold Tuesday night in front of a dozen saddoes like me just so proper players could get fit and give youngsters a decent run out. Listening to Clive Allen calling the likes of Gareth Bale and Ryan Mason all the c**ts was quite fun too. Clive got it right about Jamie O’Hara lol. It was rough and tough and I’m sure it had its place but I think it needs to be refined a bit in the modern game with the billions of pounds worth of assets being kicked all over the place.

I‘m interested to find out how often the u21 team get to play the 1st team in training matches now our training facilities have first class pitches and facilities. Does that actually happen?

Not sure if we’re meant to track former Spurs youth in here - but CCV has just received a new five year deal at Celtic, lots of supporters saying he’s the best defender they’ve had since VVD, and a handful claiming he’s been better for them than Van Dijk ever was. Always nice to see things work out so well for one of ours.

Always liked CCV, and if things had fallen slightly differently think he could have made it as Spurs. So much harder for centre backs to break through than at any other position other than maybe keeper though.
