Also I'm still of the opinion the first red is harsh (but the ref can't not give it once he's seen it) but you can't say "two red cards are why we lost the game"; Jota got sent off because 90 seconds after getting a first yellow he kicked out at Udogie out of frustration. That's not the referee costing you the game, it's a player losing discipline.
Exactly. Udogie got wrongly booked but if he then went & made a really stupid challenge & got sent off would that be the ref's fault?

No because it would have gone Liverpools way so nothing would have been made of it.

They'd have been screaming justice for Jones red card or something.

Yeah. I totally agree with this.

Refereeing needs some serious work to bring it up to speed.

I believe the game has just got so much quicker and advanced, players are so quick and pressure has intensified that refs simply havent been able to keep up.

Factor in all the constant rule changes and it is a major headache.

Which is why VAR is supposed to be an ideal solution cause it helps them catch up by reiviewing decisions.

My feeling is that once they really settle with rules things will get better but the worry is incentives to be a ref.

I once witnessed a ref get punched after being booked and over the years my local league died because they couldnt get refs, games were getting called off and then players lost interest due to the farce of it all.

There has to be greater protection, greater incentive, better pay and more help. That way you can start to incentivise refs to stay sharper/fitter so that they have more chance of getting decisions right.

The league also needs to really clamp down on managers and players getting at them.

Klopp and Arteta are defended as people say they are determined to win.

Well Ange makes a mockery of that as he behaves ever so calmly só there's no reason they cant.

Harassing these refs isnt going do make them ref better, itll make it worse.

They step on the pitch knowing they will get flak but then abuse starts. Could we do a decent job under those circumstances?
Refs are already well protected though. We never hear from them. They make a bad decision and go off into the shadows. If the manager makes a comment they get a fine or a suspension. Maybe refs would be better if they came out and explained their decisions more or apologise when they get something wrong. At the moment there's no human connection with them. It makes it much easier for fans to have a go at them. VAR has given them all the help they need and they're not using it well. I don't feel sorry for them at all. They're simply not good enough.

Thinking about it the ref wasn't at fault for any of it.

He didn't give the offside that was the linesman and then people at VAR not doing their jobs, VAR recommended the Jones' red and Jota stupidly went in with a tackle worthy of a yellow when already on a booking.

I disagree. Refs are meant to be in the background. You’re not meant to notice them really. Making the game even more about them -and already so much focus is on refereeing decisions- will not help the game imo. Everyone will just analyse their explanations endlessly.

I’d mic them up as in rugby personally.

Youre right, I do t want the ref to be the main character of the game, it’s why I’m so glad Mike Dean retired.

However mic them up and let us hear it as in rugby, we get to understand decisions better, and players know, and therefore should throw out less abuse, and if they still do, we hear it and understand the additional bookings for dissent.

Hope that is not the case - that the officials almost try to even the decision up in future games.
Last season, Chelsea v. Spurs, Anthony Taylor copped a lot of stick for his performance (Inc. Romero deciding to give someone a haircut). Next Spurs match, NLD at Arsenal, Emerson got what most of us would agree was a harsh straight red when the Arsenal player rolled around crying to make it look really bad. Taylor could not get the card out his pocket quick enough.

So yes, unfortunately referees do try and even things up.

It was a pretty even game up until the red card. Not sure how anyone can say Liverpool were on top at that moment. For me it was 50/50 and a goal could have came from either side with both playing quality, attacking football. Seems like there are quite a few pundits rewriting the history on that first half as if Liverpool were on their way to 3 points until the ref got involved, which is far from the truth.
We will get this a lot in the big games. It's because we have a lot of possession in our own 3rd. People look at the territory and conclude that team further forward is on top. It's like an MMA fighter who fights on the back foot but picks his shots on the counters. At times it's a bit like under Conte but we have a lot more of the ball in these deeper areas and control those transitions a lot more.

Jeez I remember that now, harsh decision and as you say it was elevated because the previous call at Chelsea -

I bet Liverpool can do what the like in the next game then. 🤣

You can't be in the background if you're making ridiculous and bad decisions. You can only be in the background if you do a good job because then people aren't talking about you. Everyone analyses them regardless.

I have watched the Jones tackle again and have just realised that Bissouma had control of the ball first then Jones comes in over the top of the ball.
Honestly how anyone can even question it as not being dangerous play is beyond me. Listening to Neville yesterday it sounded like Jones had the ball but his foot slipped and catches Biss.

Bissouma actually has control of the ball. FFS.

Absolutely. It was so weird he shouted 'oh no'.
I think people have totally misinterpreted his reaction to that. He said oh no because he recognised their right back got caught up the pitch on the break with 9 men. There was nothing more to it. He didn't shout it either.

Neville seems to think that it can only be a red if he "meant to do him"

Which is obviously not the point.

He's endangering Bissouma with an out of control, reckless and dangerous tackle.

The question of intent is irrelevant, he's out of control with that challenge and could of seriously hurt Bissouma.

The fact they're even debating it shows a complete lack of understanding of the rules from the pundits.

Debate the laws, fine. But its a red in terms of the laws, that's the point.

Our season thus far brings back memories of our quarter and semi finals of the season we made it to the UCL final. Late goals, decisions going our way, luck in our favour.

Long may it continue.
