There were three differences between last week against Everton and this week against Southampton:
1. Kane was brilliant.
2. Son was clinical.
3. Southampton's defence was terrible.

Apart from that there were no real differences. Southampton played all the football, we were just about adequate in defence and were generally lacklustre. We still seem to have no strategy of what to do when we get the ball apart from hoping our very talented forwards conjure up some magic. Today, with Southampton's help, it worked. It often won't.

One other thing. I was appalled by Ndombele's substitution. He had been no better or worse than any other player. If he was taken off it should have been for tactical reasons, not a straight swap. He is showing signs of his ability and was hugely instrumental in our equaliser. If Mourinho wanted to bring on Le Celso it should have been at the expense of Lucas or possibly a more defensive midfielder: Winks or Hojbjerg.

If you count managing fitness as tactical, then it was for tactical reasons.
Nothing to be appalled about at all.

Said at HT Mourinho had to change it, and get a reaction or it would be worrying.

Huge kudos to him.
Why do people keep saying this?

He set the bloody team up on the first place!

No press, no possession, no attacking plan except hoofing it long! Obsessed with playing winks and hojberg.

I dont mean to pour ice down everybody's pants but we were appalling for 45 minutes and then got lucky because we played against a team that insisted on playing a high line against a world class attack.

This papers over the cracks. Im pleased that we won, of course, but Mourinho's "tactics" are ridiculous and scoring 5 against a shit defence doesn't change that one iota.

I just dont get how a top manager in football today can play a system that neither presses or keeps possession? I mean seriously? Somebody explain it to me? What are his actual tactics?

Was PEH any good in the end?

Some of his performances have been a bit worrying so far although could also be he is settling in.

Also defence still a massive concern, our centre backs just don’t seem good enough and was Doherty okay in the end?

We won due to having two world class players up top and fortunately Lo Celso seems to be coming good as long as he can stay fit! (And with a Ndombele perhaps alongside him, depending on team balance).

Obviously Bale to come in too and we could end up like Barca when they had Messi, Neymar and Suarez just basically winning stuff for them but defence and holding midfield still a concern, especially as we splashing on PEH.
Personally PEH is exactly what I expected. He's a combative midfielder who is a bit of jack of all trades but master of none. He was never going to revolutionise our midfield or be some incredible DM, but he's a solid option, a LOT better than Sissoko, and is a great player to have in the squad due to his versatility, injury record and leadership. He's far from perfect and will make mistakes but for 13 million I think he was good value and is a useful player to have in the squad.

Ideally we can move on Sissoko, and Hojbjerg can take on his role as a squad player. We will probably need to buy another top quality CM if we want to seriously challenge though.

I know VAR can be great but I wish it would fuck off. Watching modern football is becoming unexciting and frustrating. The new handball ruling is pathetic and the way they measure offside via VAR has taken all the fun out of the game. 2 or 3 times when we scored I didn’t celebrate initially because I thought someone was offside. I mean, the main reason people go to football is for the way you feel when your team scores, the fun has been drained from it

It wouldn’t be as bad if all the VAR decisions were correct but they’re blatantly not and different refs still give different decisions on exactly the same offences.

I shouldn’t moan after that second half but watching football isn’t what it used to be. New rules plus complete VAR inefficiency equals shambles.

I don’t even celebrate the goals really now. They’ve completely taken the joy out of the event because you don’t know if it is going to be rules out for the smallest thing.

The thing with Dele is he does provide some unpredictability. He is homegrown which is important too. I think the problem is he doesn’t fit in system Jose wants to play. Having said that we can’t play the same system all the time, we need options to change the play and Dele can do that. whether he is prepared to play a lesser role in the team is debatable though.

if we sell him to buy lindgard it’s a downgrade IMHO

If Mourinho can’t get Dele to perform what sort of Manager is he!?

Dele is a superb footballer. Mourinho was saying that in the documentary.

Mourinho’s job is to get performances so he needs to stop blaming players and get on with it.

This is from the Premier League's web site regarding the change this season to the handball rule:

"It is often impossible to avoid contact with the ball if it has deflected off the body of an opponent, team-mate, or even another part of the own player.

So a handball will not be awarded if the ball touches a player’s hand/arm directly from their own head/body/foot or the head/body/foot of another player who is close/nearby."

This means that Southampton should not have had a penalty today. As if it wasn't bad enough that the introduction of VAR has brought uncertainty into the game, we get a ref today who doesn't even know the rules that he should be applying.

And maybe, just maybe, he's taking steps to do exactly that.

Dele needs a jolt, he's been poor for the better part of 2 seasons.

Playing against 10 helped a little, no?

winks still would have passed it sideways. Even redknapp alluded to it. Thiago passes the ball forwards. splitting the lines.no look passes. back post dinks from edge of the box.

winks passes the ball 5 yards to the left and 5 yards to the right.

He has to go. He isn't fast, he doesn't score, he doesn't tackle, he doesn't break up the play. And he isn't a metronomic passer.

Sorry but you shouldn't be the starting centre midfielder in a team with champions league aspirations an amazon doc and a billion pound stadium. He's out of place and he has to go. Its like when we went from zokora to modric. We need to improve on him.

Dele hasn't been at his best for 2 seasons so Poch also was unable to get him to perform, so the question is the manager or the player to blame.

How’s that a penalty and Gabriel yesterday wasn’t?!

Ridiculous

I think Winks hasn’t been the same since his injury. That was almost 2 years ago. Tbh I don’t know what he does or is supposed to be doing. He doesn’t press, he doesn’t take the game by the scruff of the neck, he doesn’t put his foot in and he doesn’t play offensively with his passes. He’s half the player right now than what Scott Parker was for us. The thing is Winks has the skillset but doesn’t use it at all for whatever reason. It’s like automatically being a man down. We have loads of passengers at the moment but central midfield isnt an area that you can have one.
