I'm sure the cricket folk on here might know, but it is a cricket term and came from a player taking 3 wickets with 3 deliveries in a row. They bought him a hat as a reward. I guess no one got 4 in a row or it wasn't as much folklore
Lucky they didnt buy him a fruit basket lol.

How things have changed. The last (and only) hat-trick I've ever taken cost me nearly £50 in jugs. I'd have liked a hat, too.

If Southampton go down it's due to their coach and how naive he is.

Imagine setting up like that and changing nothing, twice. They have to good players to go down, but they just might if they keep going on like that.
I remember AVB doing the same thing. He always made us play such a high line for every match. The amount of times we were beaten because of it was crazy, I was shocked saints carried on doing it today.

Nah I'm sorry I've massively defended Winks over the years but he was shit today. Saints midfielders like Romeu being made to look like Cristiano Ronaldo drifting past him with the ball, passing every potential transition back to the CBs, barely running with the ball into the space in front of him, not coming and supporting his fullback when they have the ball to create passing options.

Not moving enough doesn't translate into discipline. Needs a fucking ROCKET because he has the ability to eliminate all of the above. Another one ruined by the international team.

The problem in the midfield isn't one player - they are dropping too deep as a unit - Ndombele has no defensive instincts at all he is so poor without the ball so there is no initial pressure on the ball - Hjolberg tries but he has no support and in end they ended up dropping almost in line with the back four giving Southampton space to play into . They all had poor games to some extent but the back 4 as well needs to be another 5-10 yards up the pitch so we can pressure the ball a bit

I think we will need to go to 3 centre halfs though its a formation I don't like but it would allow us to push up a bit and have some one round on the cover which you won't get with Doherty as he wants to go forward

Sell Dele Alli for 25-30M ???

Lets not panic eh! ?
And if he doesn’t play, which is looking increasing unlikely you think that’ll see his market value rise?

He’s offered next to nothing for over 2 years. He’s a lazy trainer and lost his place in an average England team. His stock has dramatically fallen along with his rep.

30mil and reinvest that immediately in the team.

I'll never forget Kaboul standing actually inside Man Citys half with Aguero 2 yards BEHIND him on half way line. Hoof over the top and he was away. The most brain dead piece of defending I've ever seen and thats saying something. Yeah that high line was just dumb. Amazes me professional footballers and coaches cannot seem to change something that clearly isnt working. If we were still playing Southampton now it would be about 4 : 12 and they would STILL be pushing up lol.

Watch the Amazon documentary to remind yourself what he can do.
Players like that are rare.
Letting Dele go would be a major major mistake imo.

Seen the doc. What am I watching out for? The treatment room, choc debate? Jose calling him lazy? Or throwing the bottle in petulance?

Agree with your sentiments.

A quality CB (Dias) a capable holding CDM to back up Hojberg and an additional ST (Edouard? Vinicus? Daka?) would be cream your pants excitable. Then a matter of shifting some dead-wood / squad players.

Sell:
Foyth (12-15m)
Aurier (14-17m)
Sissoko (15-18m)
Dele (25-30m)
Lamela (9-11m)
CCV (3-5m)

Loan:
Sessegnon (3-5m)
Clarke (1-2m)

Listen to sensible offers:
Lucas
Toby
Gazzaniga

No. As much as I appreciate the time for gentle evolution vs a harsher revolution came and went about 2 years ago, this isn't FM20.

Foyth, CCV, Rose I agree with. They have had their time and served us as well as they could. May greener pastures await. Sell Gazzaniga, only if he is unhappy with not being No. 1. Hart was pretty good at his peak and is still prime age for a goalie, but his mentality has not been tested enough to make him 2nd choice yet.

Loan for Dele, Sess and Clarke if necessary and going out is going to improve them FOR us.

Dele can go to PSG if they offer ridiculous money, but I'd rather see what he matures into. His position is going to have to evolve and it would be nice to think his skill could both match our needs and expectations. Yes he is not currently a fit into the formations we all experiment with on paper, but he has the capability to influence a game all on his own.

Aurier offers us rotation for Doc. We have a long campaign. JT might not be enough back-up, especially if we have also sold Foyth. Listen to offers, but happy if he stays.

Toby has just signed a new deal. Bulwark of the defense. Madness to contemplate selling. Never happen. Personally, Dier concerns me, but again he is committed and nobody is perfect.

Lucas scored a hat-trick to take us to the final of the CL. How the hell can we slate players for not showing loyalty if that is the way we treat a legendary contribution like that. He has earned his place and is still a threat. Bale can't play every game. Same goes for Lamela. He is a threat. Attack minded and energetic with a bite. Not the Bale level we hoped for, but seemingly happy as a squad player.

Sissoko has gone up and down and up again over his career, but he is both a leader, a fighter and also a key ingredient for unlocking Ndombele. Sell at our peril.

The biggest problem we faced last year was a lack of strength in depth. We need to retain as big and talented a squad as we can afford and rotate to prevent burnout and create motivation.

We need another striker and a CB to replace JV. Interesting to see if the attacking mid links pan out, if not I can see Son and/or a new striker operating ahead of a deeper lying Kane on occasion.

Agree in large parts. Sess and Clarke to be loaned in order to prepare them further for the eventual bedding in of our first team.

Agree about the departures also, the bit I can’t fathom is the need or want to keep Dele.

Granted he‘d be good squad cover, but when everyone’s fit and on form he doesn’t get anywhere near the first 11. He didn’t make the squad today and that’s minus 2 new starting first teamers.

When a back up striker is signed and potentially a new CB that’s a further 2 places he’ll be behind. His skill-set doesn’t currently match our MO and his form has been on a negative spike for 2+years now.

You raise a good point about loyalty while mentioning Lucas, but are we still dining out on that hatrick well over 12 months ago? He really hasn’t done much to-date since which is my concern. For what it’s worth, I’d keep him as a squad player but it must be at the expense of Lamela. If JM favours Lamela then Lucas must be the one to go. No point keeping both.

He would probably go for at least £50M given his age.

At his best he was one of the most exciting young players in Europe. We fire Managers at the first sign of trouble let’s not start throwing away talented players in the same way.

Sell Moura before Alli.

Mourinho is always finding scapegoats and you’ve fallen for it already!

The thing with Dele is he does provide some unpredictability. He is homegrown which is important too. I think the problem is he doesn’t fit in system Jose wants to play. Having said that we can’t play the same system all the time, we need options to change the play and Dele can do that. whether he is prepared to play a lesser role in the team is debatable though.

if we sell him to buy lindgard it’s a downgrade IMHO

He has possibly been left out to give him a rocket up his backside, we do have another 3 games in 7 days. Rotation is crucial to prevent injury. We need the depth and Dele might face Orient etc. Dele can adapt. If behind closed doors nothing has been going well, never mind the Amazon doc, or he still hasn't developed the mentality then fine, but the malaise in his game started with Eriksen and Poch going off the boil. Bale coming back was meant to signal a shift in mentality for the club. To reignite the belief. Dele is young enough to do that. His performances at the beginning at JM's reign were the difference. Form is temporary etc.

Depth is my concern. We look at the top 3 clubs and they have strength in depth. Did Liverpool need Jota? Moura and Lamela are both commited and talented international class forwards. Not Bale level, but they can deputize for his inevitable absences (freshness, not injury, touch wood).

Only sacrifice those at the bottom of the pecking order to make way for proper class of necessity. Trimming too much fat can leave us wanting later. Actively court bids for Foyth, CCV, Rose. Sell Gazz, perhaps Aurier if he is bid for. Replace Aurier if he is. Youthful RB tbc.

Get in another CB and striker.

The game today showed that when we gel, it works. The gelling is the key. Despite the result today, we have been poor recently and bedding in Hojbjerg and others will take time. It'll happen. The wins will instill belief, the belief will instill the confidence to play expansively to their potential. Familiarity will come too. Fingers crossed.

I agree but I’m uncertain we win that game without scoring right before half time. That goal was so important.

Exactly this.
The goal was crucial because it took away from Saints all the momentum they had going into halftime.

Backing the manager who in turn backs the players means I’ve “fallen for it”?

Confused.
