The fundamental point is that we do not deliberately wait till the last moment to do deals. We have a price to buy, and a price to sell. If we come to an early agreement then great (Vertonghen, Sigurdsson, Modric) - and clearly this is what we want to do. If the argument is that we should have a policy of only selling or buying up till a week before the season, then good luck with that. Sellers will simply laugh at us. If the point is that we should accept smaller fees/pay higher fees to get people in earlier - then I get it, but we simply cannot afford to adopt that as a policy. One season of gambling to get the CL could fuck us. We are currently operating at a small loss that is covered by transfer sales.

Who said he was a disaster? If you read my posts you'd see that I said I like him. What I don't like is him consistently, window after window, doing essential transfer business close to deadline day.

The negatives to doing this are

1. Unsettling Managers
2. No preseason for new players
3. Lose early points with incomplete, unbalanced side
4. Lose vital ground on close rivals for Champions League places. This risks £30M + of extra revenue
5. Unsettles existing star players

All of these risk the long term direction of the club.

We have lost King and Modric this year. Arguably our two most valuable players. Who knows how well we could have done under Harry if the board had seriously backed him over the last two seasons.

Up until Christmas we were up there challenging for the league. Let's see where we come this year...

You say this like you believe that Levy waits on purpose to do any business until close to the end of the window. Do you actually believe that to be true? Because if you do then I guess the entire argument is moot.

We aren't entitled to that CL revenue so we aren't technically risking it. Frankly, by paying over the odds to buy players early we are risking our overall profit/loss which is what will ultimately determine the success of the club.

And what do you say about our other rivals who just as frequently do late or expensive deals? Do you think Arsenal should have paid twice as much as they did for Arteta just so they could have him for 3 extra games? Do you think Liverpool are thrilled at the 35m they had to spend on Carroll?

So how is our capitulation in the second half of the season anything to do with not signing Parker and Adebayor before the season began?

If Redknapp didn't identify proper transfer targets (as many rumours say was the case) then how is Levy meant to proceed? Just buy a couple of Brazilian strikers and hope it all works out?

Are you serious? Levy has been doing deadline deals since he arrived. He loves it! We've done them in the last 6 transfer windows. Have you forgotten selling Berbatov with no replacement?

You guys are seriously in denial

Levy entire mantra since he got here was to become a champions league club. Its why Jol was sacked and has been the whip on the back of all our managers. We need it to keep our best players and grow so yes it is a massive risk.

No one else does the same number of deadline day deals as us. Levy is notorious within the football world, media and other football fans. Just not on this forum.

Talkshite does what it says on the tin.

Whilst I agree with your sentiment, I do like to hear what the likes of Tom Collomosse (spurs fan/ES journo and has good knowledge on spurs), Kelly (spurs fan) and that spanish geezer have to say.

If it was Durham I would have shat all over my radio.

The problem with that TalkSport clip is that they fly into massive hyperbole as if it was undoubtable fact.

"Exactly this behaviour cost Spurs a place in the Champions League last season"
"They started last season with half a team"
"Effectively you're playing a 36 game season"
"If Modric's brain had been on the pitch" (as if it was our fault)

I got to that point and had to turn it off. I can see the point of view - I really can - but it's such an incredibly naive and short-sighted point of view that it makes me want to cry when it gets broadcast as gospel.

Is there a vomit emoticon?
