You say some silly stuff Bear. Like when you scoffed when I suggested that given a crack Sigurdsson would almost certainly prove to be worth more to a team than Dempsey.

Holtby is not gash. He's a long way from gash. He's a dynamic, technically efficient, tenacious kid who contributed more to our cause lately than you are giving him credit for. One of the reasons we stayed in that game last night when the going was decidedly tricky was his endeavour and work rate. He saw as much ball as Parker for example and about the same as Hudd while he was on the pitch.

So he isn't VDV. He isn't doing much that's spectacular. OK. Doesn't make him gash or worthless to a team.

See what happens when you think? It doesn't suit you.

I know he's not gash. Period.

He played well for Schalke, and had about 12 good minutes for us against Norwich. But overall, he's been an abomination. You summed him up in your ratings thread by marking him for 'working hard and good effort'. Come on, we should be doing better than that for such a highly rated.

By the way, Jury is still out on Sig/Demp, Sig is definitely sexier though that's for sure.

Stop it.

Anyone needing a trial by jury for this one is clinically insane and should be incarcerated at her majesty's pleasure.

I'd imagine that's because Dempsey is very Defoe-esque in that if he doesn't score he's a total and utter liability and offers nothing to the team. Gylfi is tenacious, hard working and really can play.

Glyfi has more in his locker I agree but he has had some shockers this season. Been anonymous in more than just the odd game.

It don't help him beng stuck out wide though. Not sure if he can become an integral part of the first 11. It's obvious we need a proper creative force in the middle and from the links so far ( Eriksen, Roberto etc ) it seems that AVB could well be looking to address this. Not sure where that would leave Sig.
I think Dempsey could well be off in the summer if we get our targets.

Please stop with the whole 'Who is better, Siggy or Dempsey?' debate.

Gylfi does everything better than Clint. Everything.

Heading?

Seriously though I think Sig is a better player overall although Dempsey scores more goals. Personally I think we can do better than both though, not that I don't want either to succeed at Tottenham.

Dempsey gets a lot of grief on here, he got it from the off. Sig gets a fair amount of leeway.

Siggurdsson is already better than Dempsey and he will improve as he is only 23 - this is why he gets cut more slack! Dempsey is 29 and still looks like a Sunday league footballer.

A Sunday League footballer that I'm glad we had at various times this year. If that's a benchmark then at times Sigurdsson wouldn't have got in my nephews U8s team at certain points this season.

Ultimately both can be improved upon, I don't see either of them having a big future with us if I'm honest.

If that's the benchmark then Dempsey wouldn't have been considered as a ball boy for your nephew's U8s team. Even if he threw taking the goal nets down after the game into the deal.

Unfortunately for Sigurdsson is that he is a bit like Defoe in that he seems to be much more effective coming off the bench than when starting for whatever reason. Once they get the nod to start, they are far too anonymous but I'll definitely give Siggy some slack as he has shown glimpses of what he can do and I'd like to think in his second season, he can push on and be that bit more consistent with his displays.

Holtby too far that matter but I think he gets far more credit than his showings have provided and I have to agree with SB's assessment of him to date.

He would have been first reserve ahead of Naughton though.

I thought you liked players who worked hard and offered little footballing wise. That said Holtby offers a fair bit.

There have been some real flashes of Siggy's creativity over the last couple of months. He's always going to be a poacher in front of goal, but he shouldn't be thought of as limited only to that. He's got an eye for the pass (Assist against Arsenal, pass that almost threaded through to Bale when he was streaking into the box against Soton) and he's showing more and more that despite a lack of pace he can make space for himself with really good close control.

He's got a real nice first touch, and in a squad that has a few players with poor first touches, it's nice to see a guy really comfortable when the ball comes to his feet.

I think we were all hoping for around 10+ goals from him when we signed him, but he has put together a pretty solid year (7 goals, 6 assists across all competitions) despite a lack of opportunity and really having a slow start.

I think he's done ok this year, really did expect more of an impact from seeing him at Swansea but he's definitely starting to get better. The other thing I like about him is that he's industrious, which he shares with our other new acquisition Holtby, and not afraid to get stuck in or show for it.

He's still fairly young and has the right set of abilities. He may never make a first teamer but at least he's an excellent option for a squad player.
