There is no need to compare Wanyama and Barkley. IMO, it was far more likely last summer that Wanyama would work out, than what is the case this summer for Barkley.

I have some worries about Barkley, mainly that I don't think he offers anything a great deal different to what we already have, but I had them about Wanyama too.

I never doubted Vic's athleticism just his ability in possession but he's proved me wrong massively on that front. In fact on the ball I think he's tidier than Dier.

The only basis for saying this is hindsight. Fans last summer were very sceptical about Wanyama. I remember it well. A liability he was called because of poor form and red cards the previous season. I was all for signing him because Poch wanted him but I was defending that opinion daily.

Not really a hindsight thing. Fans were more equally divided about Wanyama than this. It was quite a large group of fans seeing the sensible and logical in signing Wanyama, me included. Point still stands, it makes no sense to compare signing Barkley now to signing Wanyama then. Different level of risk IMO.

Not sure. It's more expensive, sure, but for a player in position that commands higher values and who has (albeit only periodically) shown fantastic potential.

Ultimately if Barkley is twice the price, and half the success, he'll have still have been worth it - but that's a reflection of Vic more than anything.

I think there's a good deal to be done with Barkley, I just hope it doesn't mean we then sit on or hands and say 'job done', as there's more to the squad that needs to be done

So, I recognise fully that there are tangible and obvious reasons for signing Barkley. At the same time, I'm calling for a wider acceptance for equally tangible reasons against signing him. We don't know today if signing him would work out. I wasn't really referring to price tag at all, Levy can pay what the fudge he wants for a player as far as I'm concerned, not my money.

I still think it's 50/50 we are really that interested in him. If he was available at 15-20m then yeah think levy will be all over it .

I still think Everton think they will get closer to 30m from a desperate club like West Ham

Less than £20M? Basically only have to be human with 2 working legs to be worth more than that.

Quite a lot of people thought Wanyama would be an excellent signing as well though.

I know a large number of Southampton season ticket holders and I can tell you that wasn't the consensus amongst those who actually watched Wanyama play regularly. Most of them told me we had the bargain of the transfer window and wouldn't need Dier.

Yep. I was delighted when we signed him. I was always impressed with him at Southampton when I watched them. He came here and actually took his game on a level though, for me.

Not exactly earth-shattering or surprising news, but Barkley hasn't traveled with the Everton squad for their pre-season friendlies; Everton claim he has a "groin injury"

I think he will be a good player for us, I think he has a good touch, good control, hes a tidy player, can pick a pass, has pace, strength and the physicality to get stuck in.

I think when were looking for players were looking at how many boxes they tick, their age and how we can develop them. Barkley has enough ticks to make me think he is a better player than many on here will give him credit for and we can develop him to become a better player.

Still fits into my theory that they're going to let us have him last minute without a pre-season.

Speaking to an Everton fan today who said he was too good for the Everton front line. Lakaku made him look bad as they were on different wave lengths. Lakaku's movement and intelligence off the ball wasn't quick enough.

Question is whether Barkley would see West Ham as a step up and agree a move.
