From various reading I've done on similar relationships between clubs a big part is open communication between the clubs.

The idea of a team having first refusal on a player is complete nonsense.

Real Madrid have a lot of talented young players that cannot inot their first team squad. A year in the Prem with a team giving regular communication on how well they're doing is excellent for development.

Clubs spend big money on players of the right ability but they have a problem with knowing the character of the person. Teams have spent in the past on players with ability but not the right characteristics to settle into the new environment.

Real Madrid will have gained a pretty good idea of Bale's character and if they buy him they will know what he requires to settle into Madrid. Bale won't be going to the great unknown either as he will have more of an idea of how the club is run.

Then there's the friendlies, coach exchange etc.

I asked JJ last night on twitter about the "done deal" he said in the summer he had a feeling had already been done. He said wouldn't answer that now.

his value has gone up quite a lot since the summer

There will be no deal done, it doesnt make sence why would there be..... Levy accespts less for Modders than he says he would and he sells Bales WTF, did Madrid brainwash him or something. This is Madrid already starting to attempt to turn Bales head. Them saying that there is money to spend but they wont be robbed is simply a statement of intent to Levy and Bale. I wouldnt worry I think he will be here for another season at least. I would lov him to come out and say he is happy at Spurs and isn't think on a move anywhere anytime soon...........

Nope wouldnt stop the shit circus that is the media but I would take him at his word TBH. I really respect players who take the time to come out and give loyality to the club, Soldando and Michu are good exapmles its pretty easy to say who is being honest. At least then if they do go its the clubs choice to sell them. I would hate Bale to join the list of Berbs and Ratface to have sulked and kicked up a stink to get moved away.

The bit in bold I think we can change if we can keep this consistancy that AVB has given us, we make the CL and AVB gets backed by Levy we can try and meet Bales expectations.

I cannot see that happening to Bale, as for his agents though, who knows

Well it's lucky that we have a young player with his head screwed on properly and we have a chairman who is more concerned about what the FT and WSJ say than the opinions, lies and half truths of the Redtops, Mail, Express, Metro, Standard etc

I'd say at least double.

Personally, I think Bale will stay at least one more season

If we're in next season's Champions League, Bale will still be here. If not, less likely. But given the type of person he is (went back to his mum's in Wales when Harry gave him a few days off whereas Rooney went off to Dubai when Fergie did likewise) and that his first baby was only born four months ago I wouldn't expect him to agitate for a move. Which, added to his contract length would put the ball firmly in Levy's court.

I'm not sure if there has been a thread on this, so apologies if I am repeating old words here, but I have a query over the Real Madrid partnership that was announced just before Modric left us for them in the summer.

Firstly, did the announcement only take place for propoganda reasons itself?
Was it simply to cushion the loss of Modric, so us fans would be happy that we might be getting something in return out of this deal?

Recent ITK saying that a deal is in place between Real Madrid and Bale now, with one person coming to us on loan.

Again, seems like it's not really a partnership, and doesn't really benefit Spurs in terms of playing staff, so wondering what the partnership was all about.

Some of the benefits that I have found:
  • Commercial tie-ups between the clubs which may include tours, franchises and marketing
  • Friendlies in pre-season which could be hugely lucrative for Spurs
  • Options on loaning players and having the first refusal to buy certain players
  • Coaching tie-ups which may see youngsters go on summer camps and exchanges
First refusal on some players?
Those that are shit, or the players that are actually decent but can't get enough game time?

Doesn't seem like much of a partnership, but more of a USA/UK relationship, with Spurs being the UK part of the relationship.

I thought our deal with Internacional was supposed to be with us getting to be the US of A type partner and them being the UK whipping-boy, but that didn't seem to work like that either.

In FM don't you make deals for pre-season friendlies and things like that to push through player deals? Must be like that in the real world too, then :)

In other words he don't know nuffink!
That interview seems to have been with talksport and we know he didn't call them so all that has happened is that he was asked the question to which he is unlikely to say no we can't buy him is he.
Seems to me if this partnership idea is the future then we might as well be in one with Real Madrid as anybody else.

What does 'first refusal' on a player mean?

Nothing, it's made up.

People who say any club has first refusal on a player have got it wrong, the only agreements that get put in place are if clubs are in a partnership, should one of their players be offered for by another club, they have the opportunity to match the bid. It's as totoner said, basically just a communication thing.

In the Bale sense, if there was any connection between us and Madrid, which I still maintain there isn't, if Barca were to come in and offer Levy £80m for Bale, we would accept it and also let Madrid know that this had been accepted, who would then obviously have the option of matching it.

I get the feeling that Bale wants to go to Spain and we've agreed to to let him go at the right price - If Madrid offer £50m next summer he'll go; if not he's happy to stay and wait til they do.

Unlike Modric, there are few comparable players; if Man City try to hi-jack things, the Spanish clubs will make their move. I don't have any fear that he'll go to an English team nor that this will turn into a saga.

People say we'll try to hold onto him etc. But I think the whole thing is fait accompli just by its nature.
