Premier league - extra games overseas

My point was that ManUtd can go play Burnley in Arlington - but play it on Burnley's home date - they keep 19 home dates, and pick up a "home" game on the road somewhere. The owners are not idiots - they have the clout to keep all home dates and play abroad if they want.

Burnley will make a lot more money giving up a home match than a club like United.

But that relies on the owners of all the other clubs being stupid enough to play their home fixture against Man Utd overseas. A smaller club battling relegation isn't going to give up a home fixture against a top side as it's the best chance they've got of winning some additional points their rivals might not. A top team isn't going to agree to it because they don't want a crucial match being affected by long distance travelling, time zones, etc.

To be honest I don't know why we're discussing this: UEFA are opposed to the idea, FIFA are opposed to it, the MLS are opposed to it and last I checked the FA are against it as well.

But isn't it the PL who ultimately decide?

And now we see the FA are considering whoring Wembley off to an NFL franchise.

Money > football. Nothing new, of course. Just becoming more and more blatant.

I'm close to being done with football (he says on a football forum).

It's a horrible idea and totally in keeping with Scudamore's attitude but I really do fear that this won't go away.

I struggle to see why they're so obsessed with doing it though. Are they hoping a few competitive matches will drive local interest up even further than it already is, leading to a more expensive overseas tv deal??
Surely the Premier League is as popular as it could be already?

However if it does happen, I think it would have to be a 2 match double-header against the same opposition. Therefore one team doesn't lose home advantage. Additionally it should be against clubs nowhere near your own (eg, Spurs v Sunderland) so the fans only lose a distant away game, not a derby.

But it's an extra game, not the original concept of one of the 38 games. Therefore it doesn't matter what the game is. So will this be a competitive game? Surely not. What if the title decider is the 39th? What a farce that would be to win it in another country without your home supporters or at least your proper dedicated away supporters! I thought maybe it is called the 39th game just because it will happen the week after the 38th.

Should never happen!! It is the English premier league so should be play in it's entirety in England. So they would take the best games away from it's own fans??!

Sorry to be a pedant but it's actually called The Premier League or Barclays Premier League. It's not the English Premier League.

A great idea! But only if spurs come and play at my local team stadium. Artificial turf, about 50 seats and located on a god forsaken island on the west coast of Norway.

If not, then a stupid idea and someone should be shot for just entertaining it.

Ok but it's the English football league of which the premiership is the top league within it:) therefore I don't believe we should be playing competetive English league matches abroad.

Sorry to be pedant number 2, but the Premier League and Football League are two totally separate organisations... :p

But it's an extra game isn't it? You still get your 19 games at home, and 19 games away, but you also get this 39th game on neutral ground.

You wouldn't be very happy if you drew Chelsea while one of your main rivals got QPR would you?

If is an extra game, no way it happens...the entire concept of the league is based on everyone playing the exact same schedule. With the NFL, and baseball, and NBA, when they play overseas, it is one of the regularly scheduled games, some team loses a home date to "host" a game overseas. It's not simply an extra game. I assumed the PL would be looking at something similar - where a team like Burnley would give up a home date to play ManUtd in New York for instance, and collect a significantly bigger fee than if they played that game at home.

Fans living in England will obviously not like this idea but for fans living around the world it's a great idea and the club's can only benefit with more support.

The Italian and French Super Cup has been played abroad for the last 6 seasons or so.
