Carrick is as defensive midfield has can be and Parker was one as well. Carrick doesn't tackle a lot, but nor does Died. The real role of a defensive midfield is positional, not tackling. Two of our best midfield combinations in modern times were Jenas with Carrick and Modric with Parker. It’s not about having a pure DM and AM like it used to be, it’s about having players with the right physical and mental attributes who’s skill sets complement each other.
Winks + Sissoko
N’Dombele + Sissoko
Winks + N’Dombele
Dier + any of the above when we needbero be more solid.
Eriksen or Lo Celso dropping back to make a 3 with any of the above combinations when we need more midfield control.
So overload the defence with two more midfielders. I’d prefer them in the creative positions rather than two fullbacks.Off the top of my head, I think if you did that you'd have a player or two less in the attack; basically you wouldn't have your fullbacks further up the pitch.
The idea is to overload the defence with your attacking players to keep the opposition pressed back into their half. Fullbacks are useful in achieving this.
This is one of those narratives I just don't understand nor agree with. When Dier was fit this season he started. Winks & Sissoko were played as the deepest midfielder out of necessity. Thats why Eriksen was dropped in to play a deeper role most of the season to assist as we didn't play with a defensive midfielder. Our deepest midfielder is Winks. Our tactics have moved on from having one of our midfielders being a traditional destroyer imo. Dier and Wanyama look so awkward and out of place in our current set up. Not many top clubs play with players who just sit and tackle these days.
I would argue near enough all the players you’ve mentioned there aren’t exclusively destroyers. Player who can run and tackle but are also ball progressers except for maybe Matic who I would say isn’t a critical part of United’s team anymore. Look at Kante who’s been moved out of that role in favour of Jorginho, a ball player, into the role that Sissoko plays for us in that he needs to get up and down between boxes. Think the natural destroyers are found at clubs that can’t rely on having possession i.e Gueye at Everton or Lerma at Bournemouth. Would say the top clubs are favouring technical players who can also graft for those deeper roles. This is one of those narratives I just don't understand nor agree with. Additionally, Barcelona is the only top club I can think of that doesn't play with a true DM. Chelsea - Kante, City - Fernandino, United - Matic, Liverpool - Fabinho, Madrid - Casemiro, Bayern - Martinez, Atleti - Rodri, Juve - Matuidi, Dortmund - Delaney.
Barcelona is about the only one who doesnt play with a tackler and its because Busquets reads the game better than almost any midfielder in the world. PSG also don't do and it bites them in the ass in the UCL when they face better teams.
It is in my opinion a big reason why we looked poor defensively this season. With players like Ndombele, Lo Celso & Eriksen you need an anchor to sit back in midfield so they are allowed to go do what they do best.
If it's true then we really haven't changed our strategy at all and the window could be a disaster. They reckon we value him at only 44mill GBP?
Yeah smells like BS to me.
