He's clearly not a RWB. This was Conte's mistake as much as Japhet's. At least you can assume Japhet has been doing well in training to be starting there ahead of Doherty. Chalk it up to a selection cock-up and bad game and let's move on. No need to overreact calling for him to be sold over that. He's one of our own FFS.

I echo this. Not RWB, never will be. I'm not sure he will make it here as a regular starter, but no issue with him being a squad player and is good that he can cover for both the wide CB positions. I think we do need to get another young RWB in the summer, hopefully, earlier. But it needs to be the right player, not something to be rushed. Personally, I wouldn't actually mind Max Aarons, now I think about it.

Can't believe some are criticising him. Stuck out at wingback. What CBs would play well out there?

Please remember this is a player who has only played CB throughout his youth career.

You must be new here.

I knew he wouldn't have played well at RWB and I was sadly proved right
He didn't play well but he wasn't bad, its just he has no offensive game

He hasn't had a run at CB and people make out he is shit there, the amount of shite performances I have seen from Dier, Sanchez and even Alderweireld over the last 2 years at CB.

Yet people writing him off despite not really getting to know his new role under the manager. It was said to see him react poorly last week after the crowd got on his back for doing a backwards pass the other week

Not his position, but I expected more from him defensively. Williams owned him today, yet when Doherty came on Williams was nullified.

Tanganga for me should be looking to be like Davies and he has the toolkit to be, but today was a bad game for him. He was out of position imo.

Poor CB, awful RWB, average (or below average) RB... I don't see how he makes it here. Should move him on in January to a relegation battler.
I'll hold my hands up. Said a week or so ago that I didn't see it with him.

I see it now. Brilliant.

:ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: Something I realized about your posts, there's no middle-ground. Doesn't seem like players are allowed to have bad games in your world. If we sold every player who had a bad game, we wouldn't have any players.

Couldn’t make the game today, how did he play? For me he’s def not a RWB… saw he came off at 63 so assuming he was tired or had a bad game? …

Williams of Norwich was getting behind JT and when Doherty came on, it nullified Willams. Sorry for my technical jargon.

Not a rwb it’s as simple as that really ! Is he good enough for us to hold down a starting place in the back 3 once Romero is back and conte has jan and the summer ? Probably not I’d say he needs a loan

RB - good
CB - not ready
RWB - poor

As a RB he’s looked solid defensively most of the time whereas at CB he’s looked a bit lost positionally and isn’t great 1 on 1… for his size he’s quite easy to get passed.

Solution - send him out on loan. He needs experience and to improve his reading of the game.

just putting this out there and going one step further in your solution; how would people feel if he were sold with a reasonable buy-back clause inserted in the deal?

I totally agree with your assessment, he’s a defensively solid RB but wasted there because he’s not good enough offensively (and I don’t think he ever will be). He’s got the tools to, instead, be a very good RCB but I don’t think he can get the development opportunities here with Romero and Sanchez ahead of him. A season or two in a 2-man CB partnership would be the best thing for his development I reckon, he needs the responsibility and experience he’d gain from it.

This isn't based off the start of this game but I don't think he's good enough. Quite frankly appalling on the ball. Reminds me of Wan Bissaka tbh, good defending 1v1s but otherwise pretty useless.

He's versatile. He's not a LCB or RB or LB and yet, he's been able to play all those positions for us at some point in his young career and look decent. Not sure what else a CB needs to do to not be considered "pretty useless".

I thought he looked fine today. I like him as a utility defender that can cover in a lot of spots s

Came here to post this. He looks a bit off this level

Given our already postponed games and the potential for more postponements, letting a young solid, versatile CB leave on loan wouldn't' be smart on our part. I trust Conte to improve him but Japh has suffered from being moved all over the place. No other CB has played in as many different positions than Tanganga.

Thought he did well today but that said, I do think a loan would do him the world of good.
I think he needs to cement what his position is and get regular time there, this constant change can't be good for his development at this stage.
I worry that he's a bit lacking in height to be a cb but that's apparently his best position, so a loan to play there would be good.
