Foyth made a big mistake today but he’s at the start of his career. Vertonghen made several.

There’s a basic mistake so many of our defenders have made this season (inc Rose against Newcastle). Vertonghen made it for the disallowed goal and the Aurier made it for the own goal. The fullback or outside CB in a 3 needs to position themselves so they can see the ball and the spare player. They need to come over to get tight. That’s especially true when you’ve lost a yard of pace like Verts. Its 101 because your first job is to defend the goal so if there’s a free player in a central position then you need to come across if the other centrebacks have to come over.

Also Alderweireld for the Vrancic goal. He should not retreat into his penalty box. The moment he can shoot he needs to stop. Toby was level with penalty spot even ball was sttuck - that is WAY too deep. Needs to stop edge of box. If Vrancic knocks it past him then take him out edge of box.

These are such basic points. Very poor individual defending

33 going on 73. He is really looking his age out there nowadays. I don’t think playing tucked in leftback is doing him any favours either as he gets shown up for no pace but his reading of the game has completely disappeared.

I don’t think we should offer him a new contract based on this season.

Happens to many great players in that you can see them age almost in front of your face. Seems what is happening with Jan and it’s heartbreaking as he has been a Rolls Royce for us. However would hate for him to become a Toyota Tercel in front of our eyes.

Tbh, Alderweireld doesn't look much better. He's Vertonghen with a the ability to pass a great long ball. Both are slow and clumpsy.

Alderweireld and Vertonghen have been living off elevated hype far too long. I believe we've lost 23 games in 2019 the most of any other team in the EPL. People have been crying for a DM but that defensive unit is a shambles Aurier Alderweireld Vertonghen Rose Lloris, any midfield playing in front of that will fail.

No new contract, I hope.

Yup. Was hoping we'd do the same with Toby, but I can see why Jose would sanction a new contract. We need at least one established/experienced central defender to offer some semblance of stability. So I can only hope that Jan is one to miss out.

Just when I start to think we don’t need to buy another CB that game happens.

I think he could potentially still be a valuable squad CB, but he's been exposed at LB. We need Davies back... He'd be great for this system IMO.

It's always the players that aren't playing that are the answer. We've been through just about all of them now, Davies must be the last one left. Can't be much worse than Jan mind. We seriously need a new left back.

We are literally currently playing a CB at LB....? Davies slots right in to the first eleven (as he did in the first game under Mourinho) if he's fit. Having him fit would be a huge boost.

That's right. None of our full back options have any particularly great technical ability and we need new options both at LB and RB.

I think it's more a left back we need. Toby and Sanchez need a proper DM in front of them as well.
LB, RB, DM, GK, AM, what else am I missing? No shot we address all of these issues. Quite concerning!
