That's right. None of our full back options have any particularly great technical ability and we need new options both at LB and RB.
eh? Vertonghen is one of the most technical players we've ever had. He is so comfortable on the ball.
He is playing LB/LCB because he is our best option there.
He was hooked as it was an ideal game for Sessegnon to show us something. Anything.

Sorry should have maybe clarified, I don't really regard Vertonghen as a front line fullback option, more a CB who can do a decent job at LB if called upon...no issue over his technical ability. Talking more with regards to the likes of Aurier, Davies, KWP, Rose.

I think he could potentially still be a valuable squad CB, but he's been exposed at LB. We need Davies back... He'd be great for this system IMO.
Gain Davies' (relative) athleticism. Lose Jan's vision, passing and technique. ?‍♂️. Davies has played a lot of high profile games for us at both LB and CB without ever gaining a reputation for anything more than his application.

That was in Poch's system though, where our fullbacks were expected to get high up the pitch and in the case of Davies and Trippier, against their strengths. I think Davies range of passing, defensive composure and relative athleticism (compared to Jan) would make him well suited to the role Jan is currently playing as a LB/auxiliary CB. He won't be expected to maraud down the pitch and then have to recover as he was before. He's performed well in a somewhat comparable role for Wales. Not saying we couldn't do better in the position than Davies, but I think he's better suited to that role than Jan at this point in their careers.

It's always the players that aren't playing that are the answer. We've been through just about all of them now, Davies must be the last one left. Can't be much worse than Jan mind. We seriously need a new left back.
Has to be a priority over the next two windows, along with a right back and CDM. They need to be quality too, no mediocrity

One year contract. I’m not convinced he’s totally lost it. All of our defenders look shite it’s not isolated or coincidental.

No. He isn’t miraculously going to recover form at his age, he’s gone. His legs have gone. He’s been utter shit this season. Next season it will be even worse. He’s not even good on the ball anymore.

I know he's been playing this hybrid LB/CB role which needs a bit more athleticism however look back to his Dortmund performance last year and that was playing as a marauding full back in a high pressing team, the decline is mad, this guy is done, verdict = no new contract.

Cant give him a new deal. This decline is insane. Only Toby’s has been worse. Cant make the the same mistake with Jan as we did with Toby. I wonder if MLS would give us something for Toby.

Once Davies comes back from injury, it will all but be the end of his career with us.

Why did he start today?

We absolutely cannot give him a new deal. A new CB in January or the Summer is an absolute must.

Napoli and Ajax are ready to move for Jan Vertonghen and tempt Tottenham into selling the Belgium centre-back before losing him on a free transfer in the summer.
The 32-year-old’s deal at Spurs expires in the summer and he can now talk to foreign clubs about a pre-contract for next season.
But Napoli are prepared to bring him to Italy in the current January window, after failing with an approach last summer.
Gennaro Gattuso wants a centre-back for the second half of the campaign as he looks to climb the Serie A table following the dismissal of Carlo Ancelotti.

Anyone have access to some sort of stats site to say if this is true or not? If so I think it perhaps says more about the options in front of him but he's definitely not what he once was - injuries, age or just form I wonder?

I'm not going to start slagging him off as he has been a great servant for the club and a privilege to have watched him over the past few years. It just shame that it gets to that point in the career that you realise they can no longer cut it. I remember Neville saying that after being dragged off against WBA away that you know yourself when that time comes.

I hope Jan ends up back with Ajax and has a decent couple seasons with them before retiring.
