If Utd agree a fee and we don't he won't have a choice. Also, Betis to Man Utd is still a pretty decent career move for any footballer.
Umm...well that's not actually true at all. He doesn't have to sign with United and has a fair amount of leverage to force a sale to us over United if he wanted to. If he wants to come to us over United, we probably just need to be relatively close to what United offer.

It would be embarrassing for Spurs to miss out on Ndombele and Lo Chelso now. We've pinned our colours to the mast and said, "These are the players we are after...."

If we don't now secure their respective services, how's it going to look to the football world? Embarrassing.

No way we don't get them both.
I don't care how we look to the football world. I only care that the team is strengthened.

There's plenty of great alternatives out there.

This is our biggest problem. We never take responsibility for getting players in. It's always something or someone else's fault.

United are in a similar position to us on the recruitment front with them needing an overhaul. But at least they know they have a problem. We're still in denial.

I fear it's going to need us to come crashing down to earth with a big reality check for us to realise.
Have I missed something? Apart from bringing in a player from the championship have United bought anyone then?

If we don't agree a fee with Betis, which in this hypothetical scenario will entail matching whatever lucrative package Utd put on the table, then there will be no question of 'forcing a sale to us'. It will be a choice between Betis and Utd, which is a pretty easy choice to make.

You're missing my point. I did say whether they are successful or not is irrelevant.

What we do know is that they are trying to change their structure. Obviously to do this they must realise they have a problem with recruitment and they are taking responsibility for it.

I believe we have a problem too, but as of yet there has been no concrete evidence of anything being done about it, whether it's news of a change in structure or top signings officially secured that indicate a change in approach behind the scenes.

Man United are obviously not the team they used to be but I think people are forgetting they are still a huge name in football with high prestige...players will still want to go there and will have confidence they are good enough to help get the club back to where it should be.
Yes we are on the up and have a very bright future but 5 or so years of being ‘up there’ does not compare to the decades that United were a powerhouse and winning trophies on a consistent basis...they are still a massive attraction for players.

Absolutely. Not to mention they pay much higher wages than we do.

All of this because one random newspaper mentions United as supposedly 'willing' to pay the supposed magic figure and people as usual go over board.

Wouldn't mind but we supposedly had a bid rejected yet we're still doing it wrong and United are doing it right.

Fucking hell.

Absolutely this.

We may be a more attractive proposition for players now, but we are not Real or Barca. Players are not going to say to their agent it's Spurs or no one. People are deluding themselves if they think so.

If Utd can agree with Betis and we can't then it's goodnight.

Honestly mate I think you’ve really misread this one. It’s not Spurs who’ve leaked the interest, we’d far rather things were behind closed doors. We’ve gotten far closer to signing players than we are to these two with everything being behind the scenes, and we’ve come far closer to players and missed out. These two just happen to be in the public eye, but that has no bearing on whether we’ll manage to actually get the signing over the line.

100% this. People see United linked with good players and complement their ambition. They see us linked to good players and criticise Levy for a hypothetical scenario where he doesn’t pay the asking price. Let’s wait and see what happens.

Yes but I think it is relevant as I've not seen anything to suggest they are doing anything more productive than we are and I disagree that we are not doing anything different because we are deep into negotiation for two high quality players, Ndombele and lo Celso, where even our lowest reported bidst will both burst our transfer record and it's still only mid June, that is fundamentally different to our previous approach.

Do people really think a young Argentinian player is going to sign for OGS to play in the Europa league rather than for his compatriot Poch in the CL?

yes, because utd can blow us out the water in wages. and weve seen it countless times before.

I 100% get why people are scared of ManU being linked to our targets. Not going to pretend that they aren't powerhouses and financial monsters. They just are. That's a fact.

That said I think people need to actually read the article this story is coming from, or at the bare minimum read SportWitness's breakdown of the article. It isn't clear from the article that ManU have done anything really other than be discussed by Betis management at lunch as a team that might be interested if Pogba leaves and might be willing to pay their magic 75m euros number. It doesn't mean they won't bid. It doesn't mean they will. It's really very vague and seemed like a hasty effort by Betis to get a story out linking ManU to Celso to get some news traction (my opinion).

Also, isn't it up to the player? We can offer what we can offer, including Foyth, Gazza, Lamela, Poch, PLUS Ossie and Ricky.

Who can United offer?

As I have said, I will fully be on board with the idea that our approach has actually changed and that we've taken responsibility for our transfer windows when Lo Celso and Ndombele are actually holding the Spurs shirt.

Our problem hasn't been getting ourselves into negotiations, it's been a failure to get them over the line when needed.

I don't believe we regularly get ourselves into negotiations for two players at this level though which is why I am fully on board with the idea that our approach has changed.
