I feel Lamela was brought in to be an attacking player, create and score goals. What he has essentially become is an option for closing out games, harrying the opposition, and putting in niggly fouls to break the oppositions momentum. The only things you can really guarantee with him these days is, an admirable amount of effort, and a booking. Doesn’t score or create enough for the role needed.
I like him as a person, and love his passion and aggression. I disagree with some of the above though, I think there are other players that could take his place in the squad and provide more. Especially considering his injury record.
I feel like I'm a rare Spurs fan that has wanted Lamela gone for 2 years now. I like that he loves the club but he's not helping us on the field at all. He has big wages, taking up a foreign roster spot and is rarely available. Should have been sold two summers ago.
We can't keep players just because fans like them. That's not how a winning club works.
Of course that's not how it works. I meant, as fans we need to understand that. Some fans love a player so much, they would keep them no matter how often or how well that played. That is not how a club is run. That's the point I was getting at.Do you genuinely think that's how running a football club works? Levy, Poch and Jose running popularity tests within the fanbase and going "You know what, the fans like Lamela... let's not sell him"
If that's how it worked Levy would have sold Jan Vertonghen due to hating him around the Tim Sherwood era because fans, despite how they feel now, and they may very well even deny it now, thought that we should have sold Vertonghen around then because apparently he was a miserable git who didn't want to play for us.
Thankfully the feelings of fans plays no part in decision making, because the majority of fans are dumb AF.
This is where I’m torn. He’s such a great option to bring off the bench to add impetus and bite on the pitch. He’s the type to get his teammates going through his aggression. The problem is he’s at an age where now might be the best time to cash in. It’s not like he’s gonna have a late career revival where he bangs 10-15 goals although sure hope he does. His wages are also relatively high, and freeing those up could allow us to sign a sarr or a Benrahma. I’m all for keeping him though if there is no affordable replacement Jose is desperate to sign.Im not sure we should sell. Lamela's a tireless worker, is always looking forward and trying to do something when it seems no one else gives a shit. He puts his body on the line for us and is a fucking bastard. We need that in this team. Especially with Jose. Lamela is the only player we have like this. Others are just too nice(in a matter of speaking) and also fall into the complacent, lack of care bullshit when things arent going our way and look like they're too busy thinking about what they're going to have for dinner.
feels like if we could offload him for like £20m (that might be unrealistic) then we could get someone like Eze for £15m or so, lower wages, younger, etc. This is where I’m torn. Yep. Ideally we’d sell and replace with a younger player with more potential, but at the same time with the ability to fight for a place in the starting lineup. It’s all about backing Jose this window imo. If he sanctions coco’s sale and has a replacement in mind, it’s gotta be done.feels like if we could offload him for like £20m (that might be unrealistic) then we could get someone like Eze for £15m or so, lower wages, younger, etc.
