Always seems a shame taking a number away.

Happened to Lennon and Jansen as well.

It's pretty clear with no minutes played in pre-season, the emergence of Cirkin, and now the segment in the Amazon doc that we have absolutely no intention of keeping him.

Good luck Danny, now find yourself a club.

"Hi Jose, do you have a minute" ...
"I've not played much recently and I know I could have done a lot better in the chance I had against Liverpool. I've noticed that we don't seem to be performing well as a defence, so I can see there's still an opportunity for other chances - what can I do to improve or to be top of the list?"
"Thanks for your time. I really think I have plenty left to give so I hope I can change your mind"

Hahaha this kind of flowery simpering might be OK in an FM simulation, or in an HR training video, but I cannot imagine any real person talking like this in real life, and certainly not any top athlete who possess any shred of self belief.

I watched that scene assuming he was going to go in all guns blazing about his credentials and qualities, and the fact that Mourinho leaving him out has been part of a truly woeful defensive strategy which you may recall involved both poor results and a leaky back line, and generally lose his shit.

For me I was actually surprised by how mild it actually was.

edit: also, I have no problem with Mourinhos casual swearing etc "you were shit", its part of his crafted straight shooter persona and the need to keep language simple in football. But it does provide a bit of context for anyone getting salty about Rose supposedly being "out of line" etc with his, more mildly phrased, comments

Excellent posts by some here in justifying why Rose's attitude is more than just "speaking out". Criticism is fine, but there are more tactful ways and manner.

Actually anything and everything could still be forgiven until the point he brought out saying some of his teammates were not performing as well but getting picked, and continued again in his interview saying he couldn't take right-footed players playing in his position, basically that being a slap in the face.

Those parts killed it for me. Everyone is at fault except him. Toxic. Bye.

It does happen if you want to be successful. You have to take a deep breath and be that person. Doesn't mean you mean it, but that's the BS way you have to go about things.
A manager (in any industry) has the power to damage your career, so if you go at one suggesting you'll have a go at his, you shouldn't expect to win. Football is rarely any different

For a correction, Mourinho didn't say that. Rose heard it, because he had decided to be angry before he'd had a chance to, but it wasn't said.

I’ve always liked the lad and felt he has been treated a harsh hand by some fans.

But that meeting with Mourinho (I thought it seemed very (badly) staged).... any grown adult who ends a conversation with their boss with “it’s not fair” ... or... “I’m going to see your boss” - clearly has some growing up to do, and needs a bit of perspective.

He did seem to have calmed down a bit by the follow up chat with the camera though.

Daniel Levy: The most likely Milan to get in touch about you Danny is Milan Mandaric, who currently owns NK Olimpija Ljubljana, now get your arse to Genoa.

I spent a bit of time working in Slovenia last year and Ljubljana is a beautiful city he should bite his hand off.

The Athletic have a little snippet this morning saying that Rose apparently wasn't told about the squad number thing until a journo rang him to ask about it.

Had time to add it in now:

The end of Danny Rose’s time as a Tottenham player was all-but confirmed on Friday when the announcement of their squad numbers for the new campaign did not include his name — and The Athletic understands the 30-year-old left-back was not told of this decision before it was revealed to the public.

Rose fell out of favour in north London following the arrival of Jose Mourinho as manager and spent the second half of last season on loan at Newcastle United.

The England international returned to Spurs with a year left on his contract and The Athletic understands he was told then that he would not be part of the first-team squad given Mourinho has three options at left-back — Ben Davies, Ryan Sessegnon and 18-year-old Dennis Cirkin. Rose has made it clear he wants to play regular football and would therefore have to leave Spurs after 13 years to achieve it.

Despite this, he is thought to have known nothing about losing the No 3 shirt until receiving a phone call from somebody to say they had seen the news on television.

Having recovered from a calf injury, Rose has been training with Tottenham’s under-23s players and is likely to stay there rather than working with Mourinho’s first team.

There is particular interest in him from Serie A side Genoa — although a move there is not yet advanced — with further options in Spain, Turkey and one club in England.

Does also say:

The England international returned to Spurs with a year left on his contract and The Athletic understands he was told then that he would not be part of the first-team squad given Mourinho has three options at left-back.

Then

Despite this, he is thought to have known nothing about losing the No 3 shirt until receiving a phone call from somebody to say they had seen the news on television.

So not sure if it's a bit OTT to suggest he didn't know - seem like it was heavily implied in the former tbf.

13 years at the club. That's just utterly embarrassing if true.

Depends on the circumstances really. All we have, it seems, is the DR edit of events. We've seen on the doc that he isn't necessarily good at describing a situation in a rational or calm way. We do know from his interviews that he's made it clear he's going nowhere before his contract ends, so that implies that he could have rubbed people up the wrong way for a prolonged period.

Considering the way we've treated our other current and ex-players, it would suggest that something is a bit different here, but who knows? We did similar last summer when Poch was here, and he refused to go because (so say) Poch wouldn't outwardly tell him to leave, so it seems like that's been communicated this time and he's a bit unhappy about it.
