The number of times in a season where players intentionally "take the yellow" stopping teams scoring is getting beyond a joke though, as is diving. The use of the cards wouldn't be made too difficult as you would say the orange card replaces the yellow only for certain offences rather than just being a third option.

There was a situation where Gareth 'oil tanker' Barry did this in the game last night and it really gets on my tits.

I'm really not sure what you can do about it though because it's hard to tell in the blink of an eye whether a foul was deliberate or not.

My personal list of seemingly simple improvements:

1. Apply retrospective action to diving. Any dive receives a one match ban, going up as they do it more often.
2. Captains only allowed to talk to the ref. Yellow cards for anyone else that chips in.
3. Allow physios to come on the pitch to treat injured players and don't stop the game. Obviously this has the same discretion as now where the ref can stop it if it's a head injury or anything else serious, but I'm not sure why the game needs to stop. This will stop those that go down unnecessarily and cut out the crap about 'putting the ball out'.

first two are a yes for me, but dont agree on the last one.
Think it would just get confusing with people coming on and off, messages passed on extra.

The ball doesn't need to be put out of play when a player goes down, and its up to the ref to stop the game. Thats good enough for me and hasnt stopped people diving/going down easy

But the ball does need to be put out of play before a physio can come on the pitch, which puts pressure on either team to put the ball out of play.

just dont think you can have people running on and off the pitch during a game. what happens if they get in the way of play?

If they need a physio then they get one at the next stop in play. Unless its a head injury or the players around thing the game needs to be stopped the game can carry on

It happens in rugby, and that would be much scarier if the game carried on over the top of the physios!

Don't think it would work the same though, same with sin bins that Rugby also uses.

Rugby has a lot more stoppage's and i thing football spreads over the field much quicker than it does in Rugby to physios can get on without causing intaruptions

I see what you're saying, but typically rugby is a slower paced game.

Also does that player count as offside? What if its in the pen box or near to the area?

Well if he's injured he shouldn't be interfering with play so offside isn't an issue.

Obviously it would require a certain degree of common sense from the ref, and the 4th official could monitor whether it's safe for the physio to go on the pitch.

Ultimately what's the worst that's going to happen? The game will get stopped. And considering the game gets stopped unnecessarily all the time at the moment because of phantom injuries I reckon it's worth trying.

My problem with the orange card is that if someone like bale is given an orange card and sin binned for diving when he was actually fouled, this means not only is the decision against the attacking team but for a period of time there is a severe disadvantage and maybe even more likely to concede a goal. Retrospective action is possibly the only way to eradicate diving but even then it's a very grey area as the law isn't as clear cut as to what constitutes "simulation".

The talking to the referee thing is common sense.
