More of a medium block, but Southampton did take advantage of the space in behind in that first half leading to us dropping deeper in the second half. We haven't really played a true high line under Jose IMO, nothing even remotely approaching the way Southampton were set up on Sunday. I personally think Skriniar's weaknesses would be covered by Jose's tactics. It was quite high against Southampton first half.

Indeed, he was the first to whisper last year that Poch time might be up.If I remember correctly, he is close to Uncle Joe camp.
Paul McGrath and Richard Gough and Gary Mabbutt and Steve Bruce were all of average speed. But were excellent readers of the game, with tremendous positional sense. Speed is great, but not a prerequisite for being an elite center back. He's not very quick but his positioning is 10/10. Pair him next to Tanganga or Sanchez and it will be fine. Ideally we would have someone like prime Wanyama, mobile DM to help out but this should be good enough.
Claims to be a deputy sports editor with 20 years of experience yet a quick google of his name throws up no results. Plus he joined Twitter in July 2020.
Reliable imo
Obviously Jose is a huge pull for players and he can attract the best stars on his own. However I do wonder when you see the likes of Bale joining, when you see a talent like Reggie joining does it suddenly turn a few more heads and start attracting talents to the team. I mean I'm pretty sure we wouldn't have been Skriniars first choice this summer but when you start to see the team we're assembling, maybe he starts to think, yeah I want to get in on that.

Puyol, VidicAny examples from the past decade of elite centre backs of 'average speed'?
Pique, Bonucci, Chiellini (debatable), Hummels, Terry, Godin, Laporte more recently, probs more I'm missing. In England, yeah there's not as many, but even Maguire who is slow or at least not very agile playing in a team who play a high line isn't bad. He's not 80 mil worth, but he's still quality.Any examples from the past decade of elite centre backs of 'average speed'?
just outside of it by 1 year (11 years since he retired) I believe but Paolo Maldini would qualify. 100% Elite, played CB as well as LB and never had a ton of pace but was really slow by the end of his career. Made up for it with amazing awareness, positioning and experience to be one of the best defenders in the world. Speed is not everything for a CB.Any examples from the past decade of elite centre backs of 'average speed'?
Too many names beginning with S!!!!!!Neville or somebody was talking during a game the other day, how the best CB pairs have one fast and one technical and aggressive - pair Skriniar with Sanchez and we'd be looking good. Back four of Serge, Sanch, Skriniar and Sergio would be cool for alliteration too
Puyol, Vidic
Arguably some of the below are not slow but I wouldnt insist on calling their speed anything above 'average' especially towards the end of their careers when they were still undoubtably very good CBs.Any examples from the past decade of elite centre backs with 'average speed'?
Lets put this to bed. He's not slow. He's not Sanchez fast, but he's definitely faster than Toby and quicker than Dier. I'd have no worries with him in a back 4 under Jose's system.
