Gotta admit his long balls were really grinding me against STevenage, but having said that he's still good enough to keep around as 3rd/4th choice cb.

The stevenage game is such a poor example to use

Playing 3 centre halves is not made for building it from the back, the pitch was tiny, and horrifically bobbily, so you have to play percentage football more often.

If you actually watch a game in league 1 and 2, you will notice that teams do not even bother to try to play, the incredible fitness levels of these boys has outgrown the tiny, poor pitches so playing football on the deck, from the back is just not effective for them.

Horrible on the eye....but that is what it is.

I think the criticism is too harsh. I've noticed recently that his long balls have almost stopped since he returned, bar the odd one or two. He didn't play hardly any against Newcastle so it should certainly be taken into consideration that we were playing Stevenage on an almighty fuckfest of a pitch. He obviously didn't feel comfortable playing it along the floor due to the bobbling etc so chose long. Redknapp himself said it wasn't the plan to hoof it but we did so because of the pitch and conditions. Kaboul was lumping it too, and often worse than Dawson - Kaboul booted it off for their goal kick at least a coupe of times.

I rate Dawson. I think my first choice pairing would be King and Kaboul but Dawson would certainly be a great squad member and captain material for dressing rooms etc. With our injuries at the back, we could've done a lot worse without him.

And he's reeeeaaaalllly nice too.

So he makes some unnecessary long balls. It's not the end of the world, don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of it, but he's still a bloody good defender.

I think Daws gets some very harsh criticism from a lot of our fans. He's been and still is a good servant to the club, how long has he been here now? 7/8 years, managers have come and go, but Daws stays. Why is that? Because he is good at what he does.

I cant think of a better defender in the PL who understands that he is not going to always be a first choice, but will come in when needed and do a very good job.

If We lose him, as some of you are happy with, we will miss what he brings to the squad.

Luiz, Alex, Cuellar, Coloccini, Skertel, Kompany

I'll give you Vincent Kompany.

I will not give you any of the others, Mike. Sorry. That's just not right.

So we're saying that there are only three other defenders in the League better than him?

Right.

Definitely not top 4 quality then.

I actually think his crossfield balls are better than any other centre half in the League. He may have a penchant for them. But hey, if he's learning off Huddlestone, VDV and Modric, let him keep hitting them. You saw how useful the switch to the left to Rose was on Sunday. It was about the best thing we did all game, the 50 yard switch.

It's a ridiculous scapegoat thread based on old, unforgiving prejudices from some posters who accuse others of holding the same unforgiving prejudices.

I struggle to name too many more centre halves in the Premier League (not on our books) who are better than him.

Vermaelen
Vidic
Agger? (No)

Can we think of others?

I don't think you've got your thinking cap on Mr Stooth.

Just about every team in our division has cb's that are comparable to Dawson. You only have to watch Nelson's performance (a freebie 34yo from a shit-ish team) to realise how easy it is to find centre backs that are as good if not better than Dawson.

Samba, Johnson, Dunne, Onuoha, Olsson, Shawcross, Huth, Hangaland, Senderos, Williams, Caulker, Jagielka, Heitinger (when played there), Distin, Brown, Colocini, Taylor, Jones, Evans, Smalling, Luiz, Terry, Cahill, Ivanovich (when played there), Kompany, Lescott, Richards (when p[layed there), Bassong.

To name but 28 who are at least as competent or better than Dawson at being centre halves.

Dawson's better than the majority of those lot. Mabe on a par with half a dozen, a few better than him....Kompany etc....but over half of them he's better than.

Now try that without all of the ones you are wrong about.

I completely disagree. But then it's you, Mr BC, who falls under the category of "unforgiving prejudices", presumably because someone called Mr Dawson raped your cats or something.

Some may be comparable? But not better. And as a foil for other centre halves in our team? The ones I'd swap would be Jones and Kompany (I forgot Jones, but he is young and still more error-prone).

As for Luiz. That's farcical. Absolutely farcical. Have you noted Chelsea's decline? Albeit for a lack of Makelele, their centre-halves have been woeful all season. Luiz is a proper Roque Junior style Brazilian centre half.

Lets remember he was 'our' player of the season 2 years ago and 'His form that season led to Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez calling him "the best English defender I have played against"'

King can't play every week, Gallas is much the same. Dawson is a great defender if not the greatest footballer. As others have said can’t think of a better player who won’t kick up a fuss if he doesn’t play every week. Happy to have him in the squad and team for the rest of his career.

I like what you've done there BC, gone through every PL team and nearly picked the best defender out of each one, it nearly caught me off my guard then

As others have said, some are better, some will be better, but the majority of those are first choice CB's. Dawson is not, he is 3rd choice. We have one of the best defenders in PL, as our 3RD choice defender. Thats not too shabby.

In recent weeks, Dawson has kept Carroll, Suarez, Ba and The other Barcodes striker from scoring. He is far from shabby. Yes, his long balls are annoying, but on Sunday he had Parker and Livermore as his midfiled outlet. parker was poor and Livermore is generally shite, so I do have some sympathy for dawson.

If you carefully note.. I said generally shit, not always, but most of the time.

what's your obsession with seeking confrontation when anyone thinks that Livermore is a pile of bollox?.. are you his agent?, or maybe his girl or something

at his best Dawson his solid. and against certain teams he pump balls into the box (liverpool, Newcastle, Stoke) he is invaluable

I too wish he would learn to stop the hoofs though, they piss me right off

They've been none too complimentary about him over on Arsenal-Mania lately.

Ocassionally Dawsons cross field balls are great. Most of the time they're completely useless. He has been a great servant to the club and he's actually one of my favourite players. He's just not good enough for a team as good as us, unfortunately. Good option for a fourth choice centre back, though.

Not seeking confrontation at all, just noticed that you can't wait to slag the guy off at nearly every opportunity. Its nobody else either just yourself.

I think he hasnt played his best recently but then he has been playing at left back. But still a quality centre half.

Whoever said David Luiz is on crack..... The bloke is no way a defender.
