Good result overall, despite the fact that some of the old problems from previous seasons remain.

However, if we tick over and continue to gain points until we hit our groove (usually in October), then we'll be in a great position to kick on from there.

Would love a win at the Emirates!

I really don’t understand why we continue to persist with the back and forth passing between Lloris and the back 4. It’s an accident waiting to happen.

It invites the press and if we break it, then we can build a counter attack by passing quickly through the lines. However, we broke the press just once today with this tactic and over the last couple of seasons it hasn’t been regularly effective.

Most of the time Lloris loses possession and gives it straight back to the other team. This means are defenders are very deep and invites the opposing team to attack at pace into lots of space in front of the 18 yard box. And if it’s not Lloris giving it away, it’s the defenders lumping it once they have played themselves in to trouble.

It is a very odd tactic given the limited success it has. The risk/reward factor is in favour of the team we play. If we had a keeper who had two decent feet and a technically better left back (as much as I love Rose) then we may just make it effective.

Until then I hope Poch ditches it. However, given his stubbornness with tactics I.e. diamond, sissoko on the wing, moura on the bench, no buying anyone with pace etc, then I think it’s unlikely.
Anyone reading this would think we had Adrian playing in goal

I watched the extended highlights and Lloris made some cracking saves.

There was one mistake that stood out, but he recovered from it (when the ball hit the bar and bounced back to him), but overall he was boss....some might say, Hugo Boss :LOL::LOL: :cautious:

We were lucky, but that is probably our hardest game of the season out of the way. 1pt gained, move on, get ready for Newcastle now.
Only a few shone, KWP & NDombele.
We have a lot of hard work to do, but its only August.

wouldnt mind us playing long balls with a target man against city
Half agree with this, I think we have to mix it up against them. They are the most aggressive pressing team I've watched, mixing up would at least cause them to think twice. Don't necessarily think we need a target man, there are gaps behind the press if the correct pass and tactics are used. But it has to be varied, otherwise we become predictable like yesterday

74% possession to city and 30 shots at goal.
26% possession to us and 3 shots at goal.

It wasn't a great performance, but that's fine. We've had poor performances at the Etihad and got smashed, so I'll take the point. It's the hardest game of the season, and we've come away unbeaten.

Worth noting some of that stats...

Ended a 15 PL winning run.
First game City didn't win since losing to us 1-0 in CL first leg.
Only conceded 8 goals at home in 2019, five of those to us.
We scored with our two chances.

There are positives, and every other game we play this season will be easier than this one.

We're trying to settle KWP in as a first choice, and seemingly looking to establish a partnership between Sanchez and Toby. Add to that adjusting to the diamond midfield with Ndombele. Once we have Son & Dele back, and the new players are up to speed we'll be putting in the kind of performances we want to see.

VAR rightly saved the day but we were very lucky to come away with a point. The performance today was terrible, the gulf in class was massive.

I’m really not sure what’s going on behind the scenes but we look lethargic and disjointed. IMO Pochettino didn’t get the team shape or tactics right for a second game in a row, this diamond formation continues to produce terrible performances

Gary Neville: ‘I don’t know how Pochettino got a point here’.

And that is why Neville is a failed Manager and earns a living pointing out the obvious while Pochettino keeps defying the odds.

How many teams will go up to City and get more. Second game of the season. No Dele or Son. Have a word.

What did I write? I’m delighted with the result so not saying we should have got more. Regardless of who was missing we did not play well, no need to have a word. I say as I see. Had we lost by 5 could anyone say it was harsh? Anyway onwards and upwards.

We absolutely destroyed city at home a few seasons ago, not to the same extent, but we battered them. They learned from it, so must we!

It can be sobering watching how much better City are when we are already pretty good. I think when Son is available, we have a better outlet against this type of top class side. That might require Poch treating Kane like everyone else, rather than untouchable.

Great point though, football eh!

Can I just point out that yesterday was probably the hardest game of the season already. Are we aware who we played? That was Man City, back to back PL winners, probably a shoe in for a third in a row, and at times their football was unplayabley dominant. Any other team would, and have, crumbled.

We didn't. We drew against them without even playing that well. And we will not face a better team than that all season.

We are going to concede a lot more goals this season due to these

No DM ie Dier

No competent right back

Sanchez

As much as I think Dier has gone downhill massively, you cannot dent the importance of this “role” in the 1st XI. Look at Fernandinho for City, we’re a bit too open and cavalier in MF with Winks, Sissoko and Ndombele. Maybe Dier has a place in there just to sit and keep it simple (if only he could regain his form and fitness from 2 years ago!)

Exactly and it is why Poch is a highly successful manager and Neville just talks about it.
