Laporte and Mahrez two out of three players in Premier League confirmed with covid. Lo Celso the third...?

The problem has always been with playing such a high line and building from the back you are always taking risks.

That's why Pep needs technically superior defenders and rapid full backs. And they don't really grow on trees, not the flawless ones anyway.

They all tend to have a mistake in them. Whether it's Walker with a sloppy pass or giving away a penalty, whether it's Laporte getting sucked out of position - none of them seem to excell at the basic principles of defending.

Pep had Puyol, Abidal and Alves at Barca, and Lahm, Hummels and Alaba at Bayern - as hard as he tries he's never really been able to get to that kind of quality in, even in spite of spending a fair wack.

Its amazing when it works but you are right you need the elite of the elite players to do Pep’s system properly.

So Pep’s basic system just relies on having really good defenders then, what a tactical genius lol. :playful:

324million pounds spent on defenders even before Dias.

Wow...

If we spent £324 million on players I’d expect more than two league titles and a couple of league cups. With that kind of spending it’s hard to see his time at the club as any more successful than Maldini or Skeletor.

in the words of the bbc when he first came to city, hes soending millions with aplomb, flouting any ffp rules safe in the knowledge its bullshit and wont stand up in court. Hes skilfully going about rebuilding the team identifying the worlds most expensive players and shoe horning them into his style of play.

legend..

Just leaving this here, saw on twitter from a guy who used to run Dundalk and now with Huddersfield Town. An American with a finance and statistics background.

Silver Lake buys undisclosed stake in Man City for $500m then 10 months later Abu Dhabi invests $2b in new Silver Lake fund. Nothing to see here...

That's not that much in the modern game is it  .. however when you consider that is only defenders and he's spent about a billion in total since he arrived... crikey. Wonder how long before the press starts to turn as they appear to be comprehensively behind Liverpool these days.

As you say, given Bayern have won the title 9 times in a row I think, and CLs either side of his time there, and he had Messi, prime Iniesta, Xavi etc. in his Barcelona team, you do wonder how much less Mancini or Pellegrini would have won in the same circumstances. Probably not a lot less.

I’m pretty certain Tim Sherwood could have won as many trophies at City. It’s a piece of piss when you’ve got the cheat codes.
