Erm...

Derby County captain Richard Keogh has been ruled out until the end of the season after sustaining a serious knee injury "as a result of an alcohol-related incident", the club has confirmed.

The incident occurred on Tuesday night, on what Derby described in a statement as a "scheduled team-building dinner with staff".
The club has promised to hold a "rigorous internal investigation" into the actions of some of their players, while also promising to "support them with their rehabilitation back into the squad and team".

"As a club, we cannot, and do not, condone the actions of a small group of players on Tuesday evening," read the official statement.
"The players were out as part of a scheduled team-building dinner with staff and while the majority of them acted responsibly and left at around 8pm and were not involved, a small group, including the team captain Richard Keogh, continued drinking into the night.

"They should have known when to stop and also ignored the opportunity to be driven home using cars laid on by the club, and chose to stay out.

"As a result of an alcohol-related incident, Richard Keogh has sustained a serious knee injury that will prevent him from playing until the end of the season.

"The players involved in the incident on Tuesday evening will be subject to a rigorous internal investigation under the club's code of conduct and disciplinary procedures, but over and above any punishment they receive we will be expecting them to become involved with the excellent work the Community Trust does helping the communities we serve.

"We have been very clear about our attitude towards alcohol and the players know that at certain and specific times of the season they are permitted a drink together as a group in a controlled environment.

"Those involved in Tuesday's incident know they will pay a heavy price for their actions, but also that we will support them with their rehabilitation back into the squad and team.

"We fully support the work of our partners at Drinkaware and the unsanctioned actions of this small group of players is totally at odds the stance that both Drinkaware and Derby County Football Club take regards alcohol.

I mean them staying out is perfectly fine. They are adults and drinking a few bevies is their prerogative. The club over policing this is both over the top and quite possibly illegal. However, how the hell do you injure your knee on a night out. What the hell did they do afterwards?

Club captain should lead by example. Therefore it's pretty poor example to be setting by:
a) Not following club orders and heading home
b) Deciding to get rat-arsed
c) Deciding to get into a car driven by a drunk team-mate

Can't see where the club themselves have gone wrong.

They drove into each other

I assume Keogh was a passenger, as he wasn't one of those arrested

Absolutely beyond stupidity. Drink driving alone is bad enough, but to drink drive into your mate who is also drink driving takes a special level of moron.

I just don't understand why these millionaires ever drink and drive. Even if it was a 100 quid cab fare that's no skin of their nose at all. I mean fucking hell for the amount these guys earn they could hire a private chauffeur to just drive them around all night and wait outside the bar for them. There's never an excuse for drink driving and that's even more true for these lot.

I think the main problem with idiots is that they do the opposite of what makes sense though.

Did you really comment before reading the article?

A car crash when the driver is a drunk team mate is absolutely worth making the biggest big deal possible over. It's awful behaviour and if I was their employer I'd terminate their contracts.

Lloris drink driving on his own was bad enough (though I felt he got off lightly), this was next level shit.

Mate, I did. There is no mention of a car crash in the article. I agree its incredibly stupid action.

The club also seems to be covering up what happened by calling it an incident etc. Which isn't cool at all.

Also, while you might want to terminate their contracts, even for drink driving, it is not always legal to do so on that basis. Depends on the contract. An employee is essentially hired to do a job, and should be judged on that basis alone, not to be an upstanding individual. Where things like this do have an effect is if the crime is related to the job or if you are in some line of work where such convictions are incompatible with the nature of the work (working with Children etc). In football you are a public figure, and because you are that is probably fair grounds for dismissal.

I've posted an agree with you! I'm not doing it for attention seeking purposes, at the time I made the post I couldn't see an admin online to run it past them, I don't want to get SC into trouble but I'm happy to share it with you if you want to post it. (y)

PM sent. Not sure everything attached though.

I dont know if they were trying to cover it up since it was all over the news at the time that the two players were in an car accident whilst being under the influence

At which point during the press conference the club cleared everything up and then added bit more information

PM me that shit bro, Im guessing its to do with the rumour according to someone who has seen the report incident that more was found at the scene.

The whole city is basically waiting for the police report to come out when it goes to court.

The club apparently offered them a driver but they turned it down as they wanted to stay out longer but apparently due to the rumours its may be due to something else
They drove into each other

I live in Derbyshire and this is my favourite twitter account, the guy who runs it is hilarious

Just been sent a lot of stuff on this on WhatsApp. Keogh injury is career ending by the looks of it.

Lots of rumours about what they were doing all night

Seen all the WhatsApp's on it. The club had cars waiting for them to take them home but they chose to drive
