Something that we have been missing recently is anyone to take control of things. No one has stepped up to the plate as far as this is concerned. For me, we are desperatly in need someone to come in and start barking some orders at people. I think AVB's tactics are being undermimed by the fact that no one is keeping to them and so the game plan falls apart before long and we are running around like headless chickens with a majority of the match still to go. We always seem to start the match and come out at half time ok, then tail of after 10 mins or so.

The one player that can do this is Parker. He is desperatly needed so that he can marshal the players and be AVB's lieutenant on the pitch, making sure that people are doing their jobs. If this was the case I think that our lack of discipline in recent matches would dissapear and we may start to look like an organised unit.

Just my thoughts, what do you lot think?

Agree, just one of the reasons we could do with Parker back.

I'm still desperate to see Parker, Sandro and Dembele playing together in midfield, with Dembele and Sandro a little further forward - that would absolutely bully the oppo.

Definitely need a bit of order and someone to keep it together when things aren't going well.

Sandro is growing massively as a player but I still think Parker is an important player for us. In time once our players adjust themselves to play AVB's style then the team will overcome the need for the individual to take responsibility.

But in the short-term a couple of captain-like players can be vital which might explain why Gallas continues to play.

I think Verts and Lloris will grow into those roles as they settle into the club.

To some extent though, if our team is becoming more collective and playing to a system, the need for individuals to stand up becomes less. I'm quite into leadership theory, and shared/distributed leadership has become the norm in most spheres now, except football. Chris Hughton actually has some pioneering ideas on translating these empowered rather than commanded ideas from business/society into the game.

I agree. I raised this point in the summer and was shot to pieces as supposedly we had numerous leaders.

Theoretically, we do: Verts, Lloris, Sandro, even Bale. But the only person i've seen so far this season trying to marshal people on the pitch is the much-maligned Gallas. Might explain why Verts and Caulker looked all at sea without him there to bellow at them.

make sandro captain until parker gets back and tell him to take fucking control.

parker and sandro havent looked great together but at some point we need to play a flat 3 in the middle anyways

and sandro is getting better so that potential pairing at the base of midfield should maybe work better than before..

Gallas is probably the only genuine leader we have fit currently. Parker's got a bit about him in that respect, when he comes back from injury.

Vertonghen could grow into the role in the future, ex-Ajax captain, etc.

Lloris captains France, so I guess he has a bit about him too.

Aside from that the cupboard is pretty bare.

Parkers our man until Vert or Lloris are given captaincy..

As much as I like Sandro I think a Parker/Hudd/Dembele would be our best 3 pairing for Mid-Table teams especially at home.

Sandro and Parker can do everything that Huddlestone can do and better, there is no excuse for him to be anywhere near our first eleven, for any match. Ever.

Parker
Sandro Dembele
This could be what we have been missing. There was a stat from earlier in the season that Sandro and Dembele as a pairing had won possession more times than any other pairing in the League, the only problem was this was literally on the edge of our own area. With Parker to marshall the area in front of the back 4, it would allow Sandro and Dembele to advance/press further higher up the pitch, meaning that when they win the ball back in that area, instead of having to clear the danger, we can use the impetus to build attacks from the there. This was something that was AVB's trademark at Porto.
I said it last year while there were people all over the place saying we were better off without Parker. It was bollocks then and it's bollocks now, we are missing him immensely.

When we started the season at Newcastle we was pressing high up the pitch but have not done this since if this is what your referring to I agree.

But does this not come down to the manager who surely must impose his will and wants onto his players, so far this season we must have played nearly 20 games including Europe and domestic cups yet we have only done it once.

I'm not asking for the manager to be sacked before people start trying to dig me out we have to ask the question do the best managers like ferguson mourinho etc let their players contine not to play the way they want.

Maybe it's time avb gets tough with a few at least here he has the backing of his chairman to see it through.

I agree that Sandro is better than Hudd but Hudd can feed long balls to Bale.. I'm not saying it's ideal but until we can get a better passing Mid we just need more offensive options. Even Carroll Parker Dembele or Parker Dembele Siggurdson strike me as more interesting offensively.

This isn't to slight Sandro at all the guy has been one of our top players all year but we were really better offensively last year when he wasn't starting.

Yes we may well have been, but adding Huddlestone into the mix because of these mythical 'long balls to Bale' is not going to make us better offensively and a lot weaker defensively.
