Fair point actually, still think he'll lineup with Dele has his no10 though.

After reading the article by the zonal marking guy this morning, which I posted here earlier, in how he has played his number 10s, I’ve a bad feeling Eriksen may start there. He could play lo celso there too of course

Yeah possibly but that can't be a bad feeling because Eriksen is an excellent player, just needs to get back on the wheel.

Yeah I mean this season’s Eriksen, not on form Eriksen. He got ozil to thrive at Madrid by givin him lots of freedom with no defensive responsibility. Not sure that’s possible in the PL but if did that with a motivated/new contract signed Eriksen then it would bare fruit. I think CE is too far down the rabbit hole to be changed from his current malaise with us though unfortunately.

Eriksen can get back to the levels he was in 2017, it doesn't take much he just needs a bit of confidence and someone new in his ear, you're gonna see a lot of these players regain their powers in the next couple of weeks like when they put their hand on the ball in Space Jam.

There is no doubt in my mind that the team will be built around Kane.

Son and Moura would be ideal candidates to play off Kane, if we're "parking the bus" and playing in the counter. I would be shocked if Son isn't one of the first names in the team sheet.

if we don't press high up the pitch, I can see Lamela being overlooked in favour of Dele/Eriksen/Lo Celso and Son/Moura.

Mourinho likes a proper holding CDM (e.g. Makalele, Matic) and tried to sign Dier for Utd, so I'm expecting Dier to be given a chance to earn a regular starting spot in that role.
Dier + Ndombele could give a similar dynamic to Makalele + Essien.

I really hope Toby and Jan stay on for a couple more years. If not, I can't see Mourinho being content with Sanchez + Foyth as his starting CB pair.

Lloris has said his "future is tied to Pochettino's, so I wouldn't be surprised if he leaves. Again, I can't see Mourinho being content with our current back-up as first choice.

When it comes to signing new players, I don't think Mourinho will be too focused on bringing in players with a history of winning trophies, as he has a track record of converting squads I to winners (Porto, Chelsea first time around etc).

Lamela is an absolute shithouser, I think Mourinho would keep him around just for that reason, other than that great post.

Michael Cox writing about Mourinho and the role of the number 10 in his teams:

Alli, however, is a different case — and might be the prime candidate for a Mourinho rejuvenation. Like Pogba, he’s another player whose best position is often questioned, but this could actually prove very useful for Mourinho.

“For me, the No 10 is a very special player in my team,” Mourinho explained when manager of Chelsea in 2015. “In a system of two midfield players and a No 10, I demand a lot from a No 10. Every position is important, but it is an important position. I like a No 10 to score goals. I like a No 10 to get in the box… No 10 for me is a No 8-and-a-half when the team loses the ball and a No 9-and-a-half when the team has the ball.”

That’s a perfect description of Alli, who shines either when bustling and scrapping in midfield, or when bursting forward into the box as a support striker just off Harry Kane. He’s a No 10 who isn’t actually a No 10 in terms of the traditional No 10 things: receiving the ball between the lines and slipping the ball through for the forwards.

Instead, at his best, when he has the energy to perform both roles, he’s a box-to-box midfielder and a free-running goalscorer. His average position is that of a No 10 but he specialises in the position either side of that role. The above quote, at the time referring to Oscar, should be music to Alli’s ears.
Sounds exactly like an Alli or a Lamela to me.

Watched SSN earlier and Danny Higginbotham broke down his teams over his 3 stints in the PL. Clear focus was on him always having a stable and reliable centre back partnership and holding midfielder. He explained how the two centre backs for united were the reason for the negative football as he couldn't allow other players to get as far forward as he didn't trust that trio as much as the previous two.

Carvalho - Terry
Makelele

Cahill - Terry
Matic

Jones - Smalling
Matic

Looking at the three options you can see why it would cause the overall team to become more pragmatic as United's defence was really poor.

I think 2/3 will be Dier and Alderweireld whereas the other is less certain I guess. Vertonghen because he's 32 and coming out of contract, Sanchez because Mourinho has spoken about his weaknesses before etc. May explain the Ruben Dias rumours.

Yeah I agree, Toby is a no brainer and I can see Dier filling a role similar to Jon Obi Mikel under Jose. Think the other centre back position is up for grabs and if nobody claims it he will look for someone in the summer.

Why would anyone play Dele at 10? Dele is the exact opposite of a good no. 10. Dele is the player that a 10 looks to play the killer pass to.

Mourinho is no mug. If he picks Dele, he’ll keep Dele well away from build up play, he’ll arrange things so that Dele does what he does best - reads the game better than anyone else and arrives late to where the opposition least want him.

Otherwise, what’s the point of Mourinho?
