by the way bear I'm actually advocating a midfield 3 also. But with Holtby replacing parker. I'm not a fan of 4-4-2, slot number 3 should go to Tom Carroll or Sigurdson. Basically someone who can pass...and isnt tom huddlestone

The whole point of having a 3 though is having someone to do the dog work. We don't have 65% possession in games and we aren't likely to as our movement off the ball is atrocious. A 3 of Dembele / Parker / Holtby (or) Carroll would be better in my opinion.

But didnt holtby say the sees himself as a central type with some? he certainly capable of doing some dog work but with added skill. I think one of the posters posted up some stats that showed in his time on the pitch last night he put in as many tackles and interceptions as parker, and Dembele does his fair shair. Rather just have one interceptor who doesnt offer much else a bit like dare i say Arsenal except Dembele is stronger than all their fairies put together

the idea of having Dembele, Holtby and Carroll together is just for that reason, to better improve our ball movement.
At many times a defender has the ball and he just has no options except to then hoof it to Adebayor or Bale. To Parker's credit he will always show for it unlike Dembele but that usually results in him spinning and then laying it off backward to walker or BAE who then get flusterd and end up hoofing it down the line

Let's not get involved of any of that, those stats are as relevant as saying a Striker would be as effective as a Centre Half if the team keeps a clean sheet.

In the PL

Holtby played 65mins against Newcastle, Parker 90mins (both played in the center, Holtby as an attacking CM)

Parker:

Mins played: 90
Tackles: 3
Interceptions: 4

Holtby:

Mins played: 69
Tackles: 1
Interceptions: 0

stats like this can be pulled up to show what ever you want. They dont give a good enough range to show how a player is performing at all

true! But i saw with my own eyeballs last night that he knows how to win a ball that lad. Great energy and hussle, but i worry he would probably knacker himself out VDV style, but then thats when parker can come on to close things out.

Ultimately i think he is wasted playing wide, and I dont think playing off the front is for him

Its to late in the season to experiment with Holtby as a DM just because he says thats where he wants to play, as far as I know he has not been given that position with Schalke in the past. We have to push on with Parker and Dembele in the middle if we are going to persist with the 442

Yeah, just the whole of last season

I thought Holtby did alright yesterday (easy to shine, relatively, in that mess). By that I mean he did well harrying, breaking play, etc., but much less well pushing forward and developing attacks. I remember one time he did well to get the ball near the corner flag (their corner flag!), and somehow ran the length of the field, anti-Messi style, ending up with a back-pass to Brad! Not the offensive weapon we need.

Still I would certainly withhold any judgement on Holtby this year, I think we will see him vastly improved next year, but it wold seem he is more suited for a less advanced role. Trouble is we have two very good wingers, then an abyss. Then one of the those wingers found out he preferred it in the middle, and then got crooked anyhow, along with the other. Now we have none. Oh, no forwards either to speak of.

I'd just prefer him and Parker and another in a 3.

the players i would like to have in the middle would be Dembele Huddlestone Holtby. With Toms passing range i would be a perfect 3man pair Dembele have the skills to go past everone he like to. Holtby have the fast Quick passes and a great movement aswell. And Tom is one of the best in the leauge to controll the tempo of the game and lay behind and pick out passes to Bale and Lennon. Have missed that part so much this year because non of Parker or Dembele has that ability.

Huddlestone

Dembele Holtby

Siggy Bale (when he is able to play)

Ade

When we play games like stoke or hard games like Everton Scotty is needed.

Is Hudd fit? And by fit I mean able to play, not sexy.

I think Holtby should be playing in midfield nearly every game as long as he has the fitness for it. Against better teams, and away from home, Parker has to start but at home when the opponent sits back and we need more creative impetus I would play Holtby, Carroll, and Dembele in midfield.

been saying this for so long i think im going mad. rotate dembele with holtby. there is no way holtby could replace parker as they have completely different duties. as much as you slate him scotty knows how to tackle. holtby's tackles are always either hit or miss with very little consistency between the two. just look at the number of yellows he's picked up most of which come from bad or late challenges. for all his eagerness i would not like to see holtby in parkers role. just no

I'm not knocking Parker, i think he's been great for us these past two years.

However, last night he just didn't release the ball quick enough.

One time he was cutting in from the right, in the centre of the pitch and Bale (i think) was free to turn and run at the defense
but he just held his pass until 2 Basel player got back to cover.

Its a real problem that whoever we play in the midfield 2 they never pass forward, they always pass out to the wings and it allows the opposition to pack the middle.

Because no one else was in a position to receive a pass. He can't pass without options, if he had tried to and then given it away you would have said "I remember this one time where he passed it to the opponent instead of holding onto the ball". Your criticism isn't very fair imo.
