We are now within 18 months of the Olympics and we can start thinking about who would make up the squad. All players should be under 23 with the exception of 3 over-age players. Scotland, Ireland and Wales have said they will not allow their players to take part (although i can't see how they could stop them - are they really going to ban Bale for example? cut, nose, face, spite?)

So how about a pop at picking a team? I've had a go

Joe Hart*
Kyle Walker Chris Smalling Jack Rodwell Phil Jones
Theo Walcott Jack Wilshere Josh McEachran Adam Johnson* (if no Bale)
Wayne Rooney* Daniel Sturridge

subs: Wellbeck, Albrighton, Caulker, Lansbury, Delfouneso, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Steele, Trippier, Kelly, Henderson, Cleverly, Wickham

I don't go in for all this olympics tosh but my understanding was that events like football, boxing etc had to played by non pro's.

Nah, Olympics is an U23 tournament now, with a mazimum of 3 players over 23 IIRC.

The European Clubs are trying to challenge their players being released for the Olympics (as they did in Beijing), a likely compromise is a gentleman's agreement where players who are selected for Euro 2012 do not get an Olympic call-up as well.

Wouldn't picj Adam Johnson as an over 23 player. Not that he is a bad player, think he is great. Just think that Bale will be there, so better to add a more experienced player at CB or CM. Maybe Hudd?

Agree with the rest of StanSpur team

Is it 23 or under on a certain date like u21's can play for the full season if they were under 21 on 1st Jan?

Assuming all English...

-------------------Hart*------------------
Walker---Ferdinand*--Smalling--Gibbs
-----------Rodwell-----Wilshere---------
Walcott----------Rooney*-------Cleverly
------------------Wickham---------------

If the other nations allow players to partake then Bale to come in for Cleverly, Gordon for Hart, and Johnny Evans for Ferdinand.

Im going to assume that all GB players will be available, cant see how they would stop them, for instance cant see Wales banning Bale, they would be fcuked. Also with three over-age players.

------------- Hart*-----------
Walker--Caulker--Jones--Gibbs
------------Rodwell-------------
-------Ramsey----Wilshere------
Walcott--------------------Bale
-------------Rooney*------------

Possibly a keeper instead of Hart if one breaks through.
Also players such as Smalling, Henderson, Cleverly, Kelly, Ranger, Carroll, Wickham, Townsend, Lansbury, Chamberlain, Delfouneso, Shelvey, Wellbeck, McEachran plus im sure many others to consider!

Have a lot of players to choose from, some really promising players amongst that lot.

I just cannot see any established England players getting into the side - I might be proved wrong, but I just cannot see it. Also the gents agreement that anyone who plays in the Euros cannot play in the Olympics makes sense.

What about that Peterborough keeper instead of Hart?
