England squad:

Goalkeepers: Fraser Forster (Celtic), Ben Foster (West Bromwich Albion), Joe Hart (Manchester City), John Ruddy (Norwich City).

Defenders: Leighton Baines (Everton), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Steven Caulker (Cardiff City), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Luke Shaw (Southampton), Chris Smalling (Manchester United), Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur).

Midfielders: Ross Barkley (Everton), Michael Carrick (Manchester United), Tom Cleverley (Manchester United), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Adam Lallana (Southampton), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), James Milner (Manchester City), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Raheem Sterling (Liverpool), Andros Townsend (Tottenham Hotspur), Jack Wilshere (Arsenal).

Forwards: Jermain Defoe (Toronto FC), Rickie Lambert (Southampton), Jay Rodriguez (Southampton), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool), Daniel Welbeck (Manchester United).

Some terrible choices and some brilliant ones.

The picture below is awesome, emotion there for all to see.

Southampton tweet this picture of a clearly emotional Luke Shaw on hearing the news he has been included in England's squad for next month's friendly with Denmark.

Oxlade-Chamberlain plays a couple of games and waltzes straight back in. Adam Johnson is in great form and gets ignored.

Hated what Hodgson said 'Caulker wasn't even in my mind until Jones and Jagielka were injured' How is Caulker behind Jones and Smalling in the pecking order, been much better than them this year and is playing consistently in the EPL.

Andros Townsend, plays less than a match for Spurs...

Forgotten how long this has been a problem for England now, easily a decade. Every manager comes in stating that form will be the deciding factor in player selection but as we see time and again it's the player's club that matters most.

The Daily Mail "just happened" to have a cameraman there watching as the phone rang!

probably just a freelance photographer or even just a club photographer who would be there taking photos of training?

Photo would then be sold on so places like Daily Mail can use it

This was full on video footage!!
What makes me chuckle is that the camera zooms on the phone ringing on the table with caller ID showing "Roy Hodgson".

Now I could be wrong, but I wouldn't imagine he'd just happen to have Hodgson set up already on his phone.........

In all fairness, he's been better than Townsend. Even as a Spurs fan I can admit Townsend is not in good enough form to be getting a spot. Adam Johnson should've been in.

Cleverley

Yeah, it's ridiculous isn't it? Even Huddlestone's been in better form and deserves it more than him.

It's not the first time AO-C's been injured for ages then come back half an hour before an England squad's been announced and gone straight back in.

Fair enough, but he has returned and done well, more than can be said for Andros. Personally, I think Johnson is the one missing out. He's been on fire for Sunderland in their recent revival and deserves to be in the squad.

Something I've never understood is why in a friendly that's intended to help you prepare for the World Cup are the likes of Milner called up. Surely Roy knows what Milner can and can't do? Give players like Huddlestone and Johnson, who have been in good form, a chance to show what they can do.

because his 23 will likely come from this squad of 30, he wants these friendlies as a warm up to the world cup and for his first 11 to get some experience together. there's no more experimenting at this stage.

Isn't that what the friendlies in May and June against Peru, Ecuador and Honduras are for?

Is Tom Cleaverly the Nabil Bentaleb of the England squad? Saying that bit of a harsh comparison Bentaleb is already a better player than Cleaverly! If Cleverly didn't play for Man utd he would be no where near the England team... Very average player

Out of interest what did Leon Osman do wrong? Got called up for good form, played well on his 2 caps and then continued good form at club level but never selected again?!

Fair points. We all know why though.
