Exclusive: Tottenham to battle Arsenal in pursuit of Gabriel Jesus

Spurs are set to rival their North London neighbours, who have spoken with Brazil striker's agent, for his signature

Tottenham are poised to compete with Arsenal for Gabriel Jesus after beating their rivals to a place in next season’s Champions League.

Antonio Conte’s team secured a place among Europe’s elite, with their victory at Norwich City keeping them ahead of their North London neighbours.

Jesus’s agent, Marcelo Pettinati, has confirmed holding talks with Arsenal already, revealing the Brazil forward is interested in the “project” under Mikel Arteta.

Pettinati also says there are six more clubs interested in his client, who will decide his future this summer. It is understood that he is aware of Spurs’ interest in a deal.

Conte will look to strengthen his squad to cope with the Champions League and is also in the market for a centre-back and midfielder.

Jesus has played as a wide forward, with Pep Guardiola selecting him there for City’s title clash against Liverpool last month. He can also play as a No 9 in a partnership with Harry Kane. He was picked as a central striker during a period when he scored six goals in three games in April.

The 25-year-old has been considering his future as he is not an automatic starter at City, sparking interest from teams in offering regular games as an important part of teams.

Arsenal’s priority in the market is strikers because Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are out of contract and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has departed for Arsenal. But failing to get into the Champions League could have an impact in the transfer market.

Arteta would have welcomed being reunited with Raheem Sterling from working together at City, but that is impossible without playing in Uefa’s elite competition next season.

Jesus wanted to concentrate on finishing the campaign before deciding his future. After scoring four goals against Watford he admitted: “It’s not just me, it’s the players if you ask for the players about playing everyone's going to say ‘I want to play’.”

Is this gonna be the big Arsenal “win” of the upcoming season - “I knew Spurs were interested but I chose to be a Gunner!” Crap? ?

I'd like us to get him - would be a great signing. Can play in any of the front three spots, quick, dangerous.

Whether he'd be prepared to swap that kind of role at City for that kind of role at Spurs is debatable

I think he’d be a good player to add to the squad but I suspect he would start most games at Arsenal so he may well chose them

For the £40-50m they reportedly want I'd rather we let Arsenal waste their money on him instead.

I think they’d be getting a bargain for £40m tbh.

If they’d signed him for that last summer, I’ve no doubt they’d be in the UCL now.

He would be a fantastic player to have in the squad no doubt - if we can get him in for a reasonable fee we should be all over it.

Main thing I like about him is he can play across the front 3 and he's PL ready, haven't seen much of the others Ally Gold linked us to so not sure if he'd represent better value than them at £45m-ish

He’s one of the most talented attacking players in the PL. His skill, touch and dribbling is fantastic, it just hasn’t quite happened for him at City so far, in terms of learning how to play on his own as a 9. He’d link well with Kane as he’s quick, technical and makes good runs off the ball. I’m sure he’d be a great option in a 2 with Kane or Son and he would also get time out wide and occasionally on his own as the 9. 40 million for a player of his talent would be a great deal

Not much better value out there than Jesus tbh.

Would be absolutely perfect for us but depends if he fancies the challenge of ousting Son/Kane/Kulu out of the team lol.

Think he'd get plenty of game time regardless.

Surprised City would let him go as Haaland can't play all their games and he's shown his worth recently with some important goals. He seems happy to be part of the squad there. But he'd be great at THFC.

I’d like him. Could play anywhere across the front 3 for us so represents real quality depth. Not sure he’ll come to us though.

Not sure why he'd swap being a squad player at City to be a squad player for us. He certainly wouldn't be a regular starter.

Question for those who seem to rate him. Why?

This isn’t me being funny, I’m genuinely interested to hear what others think as I’ve never seen the fuss with him.

Not sure Citihad would want to strengthen us seeing as though we beat them twice this season.

He'll probably be one of those players who have a cheaper price tag if sold to other leagues.

Not sure they’ll give too much of a shit as they’re getting Haland who is considerably better.

He would make a lot of sense, tbh, and that price tag isn't massive for a player like him, prem proven.

As people have said, would he be happy doing the same role for us as City, but I do think he will play a lot and pretty much every game come off the bench or start to help rotate Kane and Son.

I can see Eriksen, should he sing being Kulu's rotation and tactical option to help us close out games and pack midfield more.
