I just find it daft that you would have a pre-conceived formation for an away european game, regardless of who its against.

We've beaten top teams with 4-4-2 away from home and we will again.

But that's the point, Redknapp played 442 with hardly any variation in tactics for about 37 of the 38 games last year.

This. You set up your formation and players depending on who you play.

It just so happens that tactically Redknapp saw every game last season as Wigan at home at set us up accordingly.

Its just variance, they only had a few chances and they took them well. The first goal was extremely lucky, and the other two were due to poor defending.

But im sure if Ledley had been playing we wouldn't have been so fragile at the back. Thats not knocking Seb, he has only played what, a game and a half pre season? He was just not quite ready for this big of a game.

I seem to remember us doing pretty well away from home in previous campaigns in Europe whilst using 4-4-2. Beating PSV (in reg time), Beskitas, Braga, Slavia Prague.. Etc..

Personally id go with a VERY flexible 4-5-1 (off the ball), 4-3-3 on the ball.

We have such pacy players, gotta have faith in them getting back to join and defend, bale and lennon have proved they can do it in a 4-4-2, so shudnt have much problem doing it in a 4-5-1.

Gomes

Corluke Dawson King BAE
Palacios
Huddlestone--Modric

Lennon-----------Bale

That would be solid, but we have to do plenty of running off the ball (when we have it) for it to work, otherwise these systems can look too rigid if players are too fixated in their positions, leaves us with no options moving forward. Gotta be used properly / fluidly, we can do that.

He didn't play at all pre-season. Tuesday was his first appearance since last season.

Thats wrong im afraid. He played the whole game vs Fiorentina, i was there, i saw him!

Then i seem to remember him playing 45mins in another game, but i could be wrong on that.

We dont have enough goals from wide forwards and Midfielders to go with a 4-5-1, the quality teams that play with 4-5-1 or 4-3-3- have Fabregas, Lampard, Messi, Ronaldo, Etoo, Sneijder We have 4 goals if we're lucky Lennon, and shot of an 8 yr old Luka.

We have to play to our strengths, not the strengths of better teams. Bayern Munich did alright with a 4-4-2 last year, with 2 out and out wingers.

The other teams premier league teams that play 4-5-1 do it because they are negative tactically.
