A thread for recommending and discussing football boots, or even just sharing your favourites from now and down the years.

For a year now I have been playing 5 and 7 aside at a Goals centre, exclusively on 4G pitches. Up until now I have been wearing my old Puma King astroturf boots, which are more like trainers and are really designed for the old sandy astroturf pitches. My concern is that these are starting to impact my ankles and knees because they don't really have the proper purchase on a 4G pitch, and just flatten the turf rather than go into it.

For those who play regular, do you use firm ground or the more common artifical grass type boot, and how do you find it? I have my old pair of Adidas 11pro firm ground boots, which I haven't used for about 7 or 8 years, but I'm concerned that I'll do my ankle in those if they're too large a stud.

Any recommendations or thoughts appreciated!

My daughter's just fallen in love with a pair of Nike Tiempos for training on astro. She prefers a pair of Nike Premier 2 SG boots for matches. Both pairs I bought for her second hand on eBay, leather (less stinky) and already worn in.

The other site to look at is Vinted, I’ve had some right bargains off there!

I find that the moulds on 4g are best rather than a stud, the flat Astros i have never been able to get on with as it doesn't feel like a football boot to me might be a psychological thing though.

Yeah, I'm just not feeling quite stable enough with the astro's, as I'm not getting the purchase off the pitch and I'm feeling the pressure in my knees.

When you say moulds, do you just mean the shortish plastic studs, rather than full on metal/plastic studs? I don't think you're allowed to use the latter on 4G anyway, as you'll tear the pitch and maybe go over on your ankle.

I see they do proper AG boots now, but is it worth shelling out if I've got a pair of the ones in my OP?

I started playing again a couple of years back, when we were allowed out after first lock down. And my old Puma Kings Moulded - loved them - when I dusted them off, they fell apart. So I went and got a new pair of boots, some Nike Mercurial Vapour Elite (yup!) AG (artificial ground). And they are excellent, I love them. Took a while adjusting to the skin type upper - compared to my leather Kings - but they are ace. The studs are obviously perfect for those kind of pitches.

I'm really skeptical about non leather boots, and how much you'd lose in touch and power with the ball (although most balls are like balloons these days).

I was reading up a bit about my old pro11's and discovered that Toni Kroos wore these for about 7 or 8 years before they fell apart in last seasons CL final:

Touch is arguably better, power difficult to judge as I’m not the player I used to be! Hahaha

Only thing is other people standing on your toes. That hurts way more!

So I tried my old 11pro's and I had to switch back to my astros at half-time. They were just not comfortable on that pitch, and I could feel my calves were feeling the strain. I don't think the Goals centre's use full 4G, its some kind of custom turf.

Therefore I've ordered a pair of these Copa Mundials:

That should give me the right balance of grip and comfort. Hopefully they'll arrive in time for the Wednesday game.

Sorry for the delayed response mate i didn't see the notification, yeah the short plastic studs/moulds are the ones for 4g i think, like you say the Astros don't feel great on the new 4g pitches, they weren't so bad when they were the old hard sandy astroturf pitches but these newer ones you need what feel more like traditional boots.

I would say if you are playing weekly then it's worth shelling out as you don't want to be doing your knees/ankles in and spending all that recovery time.

I have a pair of these - they certainly weren't anywhere near the price they are now when i bought them.

Nice one, @Gassin's finest. My existing pair are fucked so have been meaning to order for ages.

I've always used astros/indoor boots for Goals' playing surface.

Discount me up, baby

I prefer black boots but couldn't resist a LEGO collaboration for my actual team :D

Kick the brick out of it

Those are pretty sweet. I hope the stud aren't actual lego bricks though!

Boots are funny now. If anyone had turned up at Sunday League wearing white/blue/pink boots when I played, they'd have spent most of that match on the deck. I had a mate who made the mistake of getting some white preds for training, when I was at Ripon, and the flak was merciless.

These days you have to really search for a pair of normal black boots, there's so many funky designs.

The last football boots I bought back in the late 70’s were Adidas Penarol, classic black with three white stripes with screw in studs. Just googled to get a picture and a used pair are on e-bay for £500! Just off into the loft to see if mine are still there.

Wore them for tonight's game. Although I may as well have been wearing flippers, playing in this rain! Bloody relentless.
