According to Greg Stobart, Sherwood was the one who recommended we signed Dier (obviously before he got the sack).

Hard to say who is most responsible for the signing. It could be Broomfield with his eye for talent, but Poch is also pretty good at spotting talent especially in CBs imo (having been one himself). Or could be Baldini.

Or maybe all three agreed on him?

Dier: “I’d be happy with a clean sheet, I wasn’t expecting to score," he told BBC Sport. “I’m not sure [what happened]. Andros [Townsend] went outside, I thought I’d make a run inside.

he has a good footballing head.... more sense then any of our strikers. (y)

I'm still shaking my head watch replays of Dier running on to that Kane through ball.
I'm mean what the hell is he doing that forward up the pitch, and why was he so centrally instead of being on the right wing for an advancing right back.
Did Poch give him instruction to play as a central striker in the last minutes of the game - we have seen centre backs sent forward to win headers in the closing minutes when teams are chasing the game.

Unbelievable first goal for the club.

Could be anything really. Pochettino with a hail Mary, a twenty year old with supreme football IQ, or a player going all in after finding himself out of position.

I'm backing it was partly tactical intelligence, confidence in skills and a chunk of bravery and game awareness.

Ice cool stuff in the end, didn't feel at the time to be as reckless at it probably was, which I think is a great reflection on his decision making skills.

I think it showed instinct from Dier to be that far forward. He'd come up the right, and rather than stay back he saw an opportunity and took it. I think AVBs system failed because of players doing to opposite.

So a 20-year-old in his debut game in a new and notoriously challenging league puts in a solid and controlled performance as a centre back and emergency right back and scores the winning goal with a neat run and finish as the most advanced attacker in his new team. In the opening game of the season. In an away game. In a London derby. In a team down to ten men. Bloody hell, he's got a lot to live up to now.

well he can only get better innit

Poch said in the post match interview that Dier's purchase was on the table when he joined meaning it was a Franco/Levy deal but Poch agreed with it

Really? Wasn't it Sherwood and Ferdinand's famed scouting which led to us turning down the chance to sign Luis suarez

And Sir Alex Ferguson sold Pique and Pogba. So what? You can't win them all unfortunately. Nobody ever has and nobody ever will.

What I like best about his goal was how alert he was to the chance. You can see he is sort of loitering up top, clearly doesn't know what he is doing there and then as soon as Kane receives the ball he made the run. It was instinctive but very clever.

Our strikers could learn something from him without a doubt.

He didn't want to sell either, Pique wanted back to Barca and Pogba wanted a better deal than the one United were offering.

Cmon, anyone who watched Suarez in the 2010 world cup could see he had all the attributes to succeed in the premiership.

Another interesting article, this time dealing with the difference in focus for youth in England and Portugal:

http://www.london24.com/sport/footb...system_compares_to_portuguese_setup_1_3730244

It’s not really about winning, only once you get to like the reserves or the seniors. As kids, you want to win but it wasn’t their main ambition.

“Their ambition was just to teach us the best way to play football and let us make mistakes. You were never punished for making a mistake, it was almost seen as a good thing because you learn from it.

This is something we have discussed in the under-21's forum. Our youth set-up took something of a similar approach - probably best to call it a combination though, rather than a direct mimicking of the Continental way of doing things, I believe.

I liked the timing of Dier's run, got it perfectly, half a yard onside and finished like a striker. How many of our strikers in the past would have messed up the chance - maybe we should play him as one ...... just kidding ...... honest!

Can't win them all?! What the fuck has Sherwood ever won? Comparing him with Ferguson.... I've heard it all now.
