I think we all agree that Poch is great at man management and bringing young players through but I think he is very short on tactics and having a plan B. So I ask you does he need and assistant that is a tactical genious and before you ask I think the answer would be Hoddle. He is great at tactics but poor on player relations so to me that would be a perfect fit and could make the difference to 5th or 6th and the top.

To be fair Conte plays the same formation more or less. We were not blessed in the same way as we are now with players and that formation was based on available players. Give it a few years majority of the prem will be playing these tactics. Glenn is and was definately ahead of his time.

That formation when played correctly by players who think is outstanding.

He just needs to get better at it. He needs to take the rough with the smooth to become a better overall manager - one we can rely on for years to come.

If SAF rates him, theres something clearly there.

A manager who is very short on tactics and doesn't have a plan B doesn't finish 3rd in this league mate.

People mentioning Plan B's and great tactics and also SAF. SAF never really had a plan B, nor was he anywhere near a great tactition, but remains the greatest manager this league has ever seen.

I think some people only recognise a plan B if it consists of another striker coming on and a dm/defender coming off.

Yep. That highest PL finish spending a fraction of those before him, using and improving many of the same players cast aside by other managers plus going unbeaten in the first 10 this time around, it's a clear cry for help.
All whilst being tactically out manoeuvred week in week out

I don't think the issue is a lack of plan B, but a persistent lack of balance. We've receded to getting the ball forward very hesitantly, very slowly, and with little confidence. With Kane in the side, and him playing well, we had more urgency, confidence, and incision. This is not to say that we're desperate for Kane to return necessarily, but rather that I do think that we do need that spark of confidence back.

I don't think you thought this through, Hoddle wasn't great when he was here, do you really think Poch would ever agree to this?

Good formation, wrong personnel. We can make that work now if Poch ever wanted a plan B. He could use Dier alongside Toby and Verts. Your left and right CBs need to be comfortable going out wide and playing like a FB, which Dier and Verts can do.

You could either go with 1 up top, 3 behind and an achorman (Eg. Wanyama; Eriksen, Alli, Son; Kane) or 2 up top and 3 behind (Eg. Kane, Janssen; Eriksen, Wanyama, Alli). We've enough players to mix things up.

A formation is meaningless unless it's getting the best out of the players at your disposal.

This is an abomination.

Come on, he gets so much flack for this... No one knows how that team would've done. I can't imagine it would've done much worse than the team AVB put out that day. Or Sherwood's tactics where we would just get thrashed by every top 4 team.

I still would've loved to have seen what Hoddle could've done as a caretaker. I think it certainly would've been much more fun than Sherwood where we just got thrashed by every top 4 team

I actually cannot believe people are genuinely questioning Poch. Honestly thought it was some sort of dead banter after the game Saturday.

That's what happened last season with Dier being the CDM dropping in to the DF with Rose and Walker bombing forward.

There is a fine line between formations, providing structure but needing the players to be flexible.
