We always have the annual threads asking a similar "would you rather Spurs win the FA cup or finish 4th in the league?" question. I was considering a different take on this today....

Now imagine we make it through to the FA cup final & still have a chance of 4th on the last day of the season - at the same time the band of travelling midgets from Woolwich make it to the Champions League final (god forbid!).

What would you sacrifice if you could guarantee they didn't win the trophy?

For me, seeing that lot win the only trophy we, as a club, have never taken home would simply be too much & would most likely give that lot the bragging rights for the rest of my natural life. To me, 4th place this season (or perhaps even the FA Cup) is a price I'd be willing to pay just to ensure they didn't win the big one!

At least we can still say we won a European trophy before they did - before any other English team in fact. First team to win a double in the modern Era etc. A European Cup for that bunch of S.London vagrants would eclipse our grand history - don't think I could handle it!

So come on - what d'ya say?

In hindsight I really should have allowed people to vote for more than one option there - should probably have included a "none of the above - I want success for us, sod Arsenal" - can a mod amend the poll or are we stuck with it as is?

For a start there is no european cup, it's the CL

Secondly, I was going to say that I wouldn't sacrifice anything but if they won the one thing we never have then it'll be a pita. So I'd happily sacrifice an fa cup final defeat. Hell I'd rather get knocked out in the 3rd round rather than lose the final

They'll never win the CL anyway, they will crumble as soon as they play someone good from La Liga, Premier league or Serie A.

Agree. They are not near good enough to win CL . Porto tonight were no better than Wigan :eek:mg:

The competition is the Champions League - the trophy awarded to the winner is still "The European Cup" (well the full title is the "European Champion Clubs' Cup" but its a formal title very rarely used - in practice always abb. to European Cup) - the point remains, its the most prestigious trophy in world Club Football. The winners of the CL are therefore also de facto winners of "The European Cup" - trust me mate, I'm speaking the truth here.

(well, according to Fifa the top-tier competition is the World Club Cup - but in reality European football is the pinnacle of the club game & the CL is the highest level of competitive club football played anywhere in the world while the World Club Cup is Fifa marketing nonsense or no importance whatsoever).

Exactly!

Plus a similar poll was run recently.

Nice try, dude, but I think we've established that while most of us would hate Arsenal winning anything at all, success for Spurs is always more important. Plus, as we don't really compete with them in the league (or CL for that matter..) this year and they're out of the FA Cup our season run-ins are completely unrelated..

However, I would take finishing above Arsenal in the league (also outside the top 4) over a Carling Cup victory.

I'm not giving up hope of seeing King Ledley or Awesome Dawson hoisting that big, wonky piece of tin above their head - screw 4th place, i can live with just being in the Europa League, even if it does sound like a second rate Superhero outfit.
