Wasn't Moses playing really well for them at the time as a WB? And wasn't Rose out injured?? I think Poch was just trying to match up with them
Yep, he was trying to match them up and Rose was out, but it was still extremely dumb. Davies was on the bench. Just play 4 at the back and play him.

Son was completely blunted as a wing back and surprise surprise, he wasn't the best person to get faced up in the box...

I'll defend a lot of things Poch did, but that was stupid and I'm pretty sure he'd accept that too.

Was expecting it to say "a big thanks to all the player" and that all the players would try to figure out which one he meant.

I was looking for something else but found this thread by a southampton fan about Poch on his time there. A lot of people put it down to sour grapes by the southampton fan at the time.

But reading it now with hindsight it is quite interesting.

Wanted to match Moses' pace, I could see the logic in hindsight it was a terrible decision

I don’t think it was that at all. I think Davies was the easiest player to drop as it meant he didn’t have to choose between Alli (pretty much a guaranteed starter under Poch) / Son (who had been playing very well) / Dier (who was a regular starter at the time). That was my one major criticism of Poch - he didn’t like upsetting his big players and wasn’t ruthless enough in dropping / subbing them.

Just my onions.

I think some of that is fair. But some not so much.

He did always prefer a smaller squad. He said that a number of times.
He did rely on roughly the same core of players to the detriment of the health of the team.
He didn't have a plan B on some occasions.
and he did struggle to turn the tide in big games.
Ultimately, he certainly burnt out that core group of players.

However, I do think he was trying to evolve. He was trying a number of new systems but his problem was that it wasn't working and he didn't seem to know the way forward (unless that way forward was a huge rebuild).
He also was a very good manager in the sense of keeping players positive and changed the mentality.
We also found ourselves behind on a few occasions and turned it around many times.

I do think he was learning a lot of new things during his time with us.

I do worry to an extent though because I think he started to buy into his own hype a bit too much and wouldn't listen to others telling him to change his training methods and then there was the book - the sort of thing you do when you have achieved something first, or get towards the end of your career. And then the stuff with the lemons and stuff - which is fine from a personal perspective but I think if you make too much of it and the team isn't doing well it could seem a little odd.

Think we should close this thread and move on. Wish him well in the future and thanks for all the good times and that's it.
