3rd place game is dumb in most WCs - its even worse this year given that most of the players are still in the middle of their domestic seasons.

I've been saying for a couple of years now that it wasn't so much that Messi's quality had dropped, but more like he was saving his body for this world cup (and for last year's copa america). That's why he chose to go to PSG, since there he didn't had to be anymore the one who carried the team.

One could see during the two/three months before the world cup that Messi started producing again a bit like during his greatest days, probably because he wanted to be in enough competitive form for the WC. Maybe his body isn't so explosive anymore, but the magic is still there. Now this Sunday he has a chance to finish his career in the most amazing way possible, but it certainly won't be easy, since both Morocco and France are in a very strong shape.

Don't get the Argentinian love in. Croatia didn't turn up. They've had a bit of a charmed route to the final. Although I do agree it's good to see Messi have a decent tournament.

If its France in the final, (can't see another morocco upset) then Alles Les Bleu!

I have money on France, so if they get through I’ll be with you!

Most footballing people would love Messi to win the world cup and put a massive cherry on top of what has been the greatest career in the history of the game.

As a Swede I can tell you our bronze medal in 1994 when we beat Bulgaria 4-0 meant the world to the country. It also allows you to go out on a high having just lost a semifinal.

If Marooco would be able to get a medal around the neck for their heroics this WC it would mean much more than if they were to go straight out tomorrow.

The game for third place has been around since 1934, so I think on the contrary it would be quite dumb to abolish it because it happens to occur in the winter.

I couldn't name a single 3rd place winner in the history. But its a game where I doubt the teams will be giving their best, having just lost a semi-final, and with the players headed back to their club times straight after the tournament.

Its a little different when its in the summer, and the players will be going on holiday for 3 weeks.

You don't think Messi is all that then?
I want France to win the world cup. As soon as England went out. I have that fortune in terms of national sides, be it rugby or football.

I appreciate Messi as a footballer. He's been brilliant. But i dont, in general, care for all the hyperbole that goes with this sport.

I definitely think you would feel different about it should the US loose a semifinal in the next World Cup (if i remember your nationality right :))

Yeah - honestly - winning a 3rd place game would be very anti-climatic for me. Its like giving out a participation trophy.

I would be proud that the US made it to a semi-final. It would not matter to me if they won or lost a 3rd place game

I'm reminded of the fact that this was a nailed on PK for Argentina but when Lloris gets the ball first against Newcastle he "needed to be stronger".
