We were not lethal. First half wasn’t as good as been made out. It cost us the game keeping them in it. Four up at half time is a great first half. The only things that get you points in football are goals... and now dodgy VAR decisions.
The first half was the best football we've played under Jose IMO. You're right that the finishing let us down but in terms of the quality of the football it was fantastic. On another day their goalkeeper doesn't play an absolute blinder, we don't hit the woodwork multiple times and we trot to an easy victory. Even though the result was unjustly stolen from us in the end, the performance was fantastic.

It doesn’t top the second half against Southampton. That was great football with end product. And in either case the weakness of the opposition was a big factor.

So anoying as I thought we can build some momentum. 3 wins in a row and this should be 4. Still we must build on this performance cause we played very well. And hopefully we use the anger to smash Chelsea on Tuesday. I really think we are playing better and better with every game.

The difference is that Southampton played into our hands by playing a suicidally high line which Kane ripped to shreds. Today we were coming up against a team parking the bus, which many predicted would be Jose's undoing, and we forced their keeper into a dozen saves. In context I still say it was the best football we've played and is hugely promising for how we'll be able to play against defensive setups especially once Ndombele and Bale are fully up to speed.

FWIW I thought we played some really decent stuff today, we hit the bar twice and their keeper was MOTM. Sure we should’ve finished our chances but that performance was certainly anything from boring Jose football just a real kick in the balls with the ridiculous handball decision at the end.

Onwards and upwards into a huge week next week.

Fully agree. It’s just such a shame that yet again with Spurs we are going into the season with a few holes which could really cost us this week but to be fair a few other big teams are also having issues with injuries etc and we’ve made some very good signings just so so hope we can scrape past Chelsea and maccabi and mabye get a draw or lucky win against man.u and then if we have the final signings In Jose needs + bale back things will be looking very rosey.

But agree performance today was very promising.

We played well but Newcastle were useless. There’s parking the bus and then there’s just not having a clue. We’ll come up against better organised defences than that.

But for their goalkeeper playing a blinder and the authorities yet again conspiring to screw us, we’d be praising mourinho right now for having us play attractive, low block breaking, creative attacking football today.

Which is why that debate about quality vs success was absolute nonsense.

I liked his comments about Spurs not being respected. We need that nasty competitive edge to us.
Me too. I was following the match on the BBC match tracker and, although I can't remember specifics, there were multiple comments written by the "commentator" that made me think "they wouldn't have said that about United early on under José", despite the fact that he has a much better team/squad with us than he did with them.

I’m personally more confident than ever that we’re going to do something great, and manager. Squad ours very strong, football is getting better in all aspects by the game, and I can imagine today acting as a catalyst for that siege mentality which mourinho has utilised so well his entire career. I reckon we get 10 points from our next 4 matches and are sitting in the top 4 going into the Manchester City game.

My main problem with Mourinho is how he detaches himself when it all goes to shit. No reason why I can’t have a share when times are good. I’ll hit the eject button when he does.
Oh I wasn’t trying to goad you so please don’t take out as such, I was under the impression you were in the ‘don’t like his football’ camp is all.

Yeah I'm a big fan of Jose and I'm loving the direction we're heading. I'm really enjoying watching the mental transition of our players and I'm enjoying all the small things which helps them transition to winner. I really do believe we're going to do something big with him and I'm not talking domestic or europa trophies, I think he will win us something big.

xG of at least 3.0 across the various people who create the figures tells you that the system worked and we created good goalscoring opportunities. Jose cannot finish those opportunities so cannot be held responsible.

Very pleased with that today. Shocking outcome, but very good performance for the most part.

Well done to Jose and the guys.

It really is a crying shame we weren't rewarded with that 2nd goal. Some of the performances were great. Watching Sanchez get his heading correct by being positionally correct was an absolute joy.

Today's peformance and result reminded me of a match against stoke in Poch's 2nd season when we played them off the pitch, yet Alderwiereld gave up a soft late penalty that spoiled the result. But the squad really looked like they had fully bought into the manager's vision and went on a wonderful run. I got the same vibes after this game, and I feel this team is now a Mourinho team and is gonna do great things.

What pleased me about today is that I can finally see the plan, an identity and so do the players.

Last week we could'nt miss, this week the GK has a worldie.

'Football is a funny old game' as a legend once said.
