Cant believe im saying this but i still think theres a great player in there. Not sure if uts been the uncertain environment causing him to not fulfil his potential but i do see the defender he was meant to be in there.
In a back 3 of course but i feel Nuno will keep him and work strongly on his confidence to help him become the player many saw in him.

I have faith.

what about all his other “shaky” performances when mourinho wasn’t in charge?

Look back at my posts in this thread i'm not a sanchez fan he is rash and lacks composure despite having some good potential. However the Mourinho management style certainly made his issues worse not better.

The guy can't pass to save his life and gets muscled off the ball far too easily. He is probably one of the most erratic defenders I have ever seen and that's not what you want your £40m+ CB to be like.

It's a shame as I think we all had really high hopes when we signed him 4 years ago.

We need to start being ruthless with a lot of the deadwood and recouping as much money as possible. Anything over £20m, we should grab and run IMO.

I often wonder what people se when they watch football, people say Sanchez is good on the ball then say Maguire is a donkey. I really do think most fans don't watch the game.

Sanchez has always been a bit nervous on the ball for me, but he makes up for it with his recovery pace, and decision making.

Most people will remember his mistakes but he actually makes some very good defensive decisions that go unnoticed. I wouldn't call him erratic unless he gets caught on the back foot, he does have the recovery pace but sometimes its not enough and then his brain goes out the window. There are not many defenders out there that keep their head on the back foot and most of them are well experienced. Sanchez is young enough that we can work on it.

Put an experienced, ball playing CB next to him and he shines.

Saying this, if we get a good offer for him we will have to consider it.

An absolute key attribute for CB is decision making, the best centre-backs very rarely make bad decisions. They know when to hold, when to follow or when to jump in. You can have all the pace, height or strength in the world but if you often make poor choices then you will be exposed.
I have watched enough of Sanchez (you can add Dier to this too) to see that his decision making is clearly what lets him down. Whilst not impossible for him to improve at this, its highly unlikely he drastically improves.

Matt Law had an article this morning saying Sevilla likely to renew their interest in Sanchez.

Dont think we can let Sanchez go until we get another body in, that would leave us with Roden, Tanganga, Dier with no other back up and playing most likely 3 CBs.

Or getting sanchez out the door opens us up to pursue another CB. Rumors have gone pretty cold on a secondary CB so maybe waiting for money to come in before doing that?

Less than 2 weeks to go to kick off, are we not close on both Romero and Tomi?

If by 'not close' you mean they haven't signed, then you would be correct.

I think all signs point towards the fact that other then a few loose-ends, we are must definitely close on both.

All that pessimism will give you stomach ulcers, relax...

Seems that way but all reports have been that Tomi will be playing RB.

I just listened to Ally Golds podcast and he basically states what I did before. Likely to be Sanchez out and then we'll look for other players towards the end of the window. He expects Dier to be starting against Man City.

In both Dier’s and Sanchez’ defense, it certainly didn’t help that we:
1. Played on the back-foot for much of the time, putting them under constant and unnecessary pressure.
2. Had full-backs on both sides — and I’m including Reggie for the last part of the season — who were determined to be caught out of position and not block a single cross.

Having said that, I recall them playing together away at Sheffield United the year before and they were shambolic.

I definitely agree that playing on the back foot constantly with a players ahead of them who were half-hearted in the press didn't help. It's no coincidence that whoever played at CB looked unsure and consistently made mistakes. Good players should be able to adapt to different systems and philosophies but I think there was in something in switching to a complete backfoot style from a being a team, under Poch, who were more front foot and proactive, exposed our weaknesses in the worst possible way.

Decision making is hampered by shot confidence. Mourinho dragged half the team.

Tbh I expect both Dier and Sanchez to be starting against City at this point. What’s the earliest Romero can be integrated into training? Middle of next week, end of next week? Doesn’t leave much time to get settled into a defensive partnership. Even if we pull off a coup and sign Kounde as well, I don’t see us having time to get them ready for the first game.
