I suspect if he comes he will be our backup RB initially.
WHy do we have to have 'back ups' anymore? WHy can't we have competition for places, or decent options off the bench? Tactical options...Aarons is better going forward than Celik, for example. Celik better defensively. Castagne good at both.

Strength in depth for a top 6 team rather than sub-optimal squad players.

For what it's worth, I'd take the 1.78m listed height for Aarons with a huge grain of salt. He has definitely appeared shorter than that whenever I've seen him play, but that's just an observation from afar.

To better compare though, here is him pictured with Jamal Lewis who on the same sites is also listed at 1.78m:

I wouldn't be so sure.
If we bring in Aarons and one of the other linked fightbacks, the advantage Aarons has is he knows the league.
Who ever else come in might take a few months to settle

Aaron’s is great for a long term option but I honestly don’t expect him to perform to the level that Aurier did since Jose arrived. TAA aside Aurier was one of the top performing full backs. Statistically he did well, played in a very very demanding role expected to get up and down the line constantly.

It would be very naive to expect a lot from Aaron’s so early on and I would honestly prefer we signed someone else along with him. The likes of Castagne would be perfect as he can play both sides.
Statistics don't hide the fact that he made big errors every single match.

As an aside, I like Davies but not sure I've ever seen a player give the ball away as much. Not sure if the stats show it, but he constantly screws up very simple passes.

Both fullbacks are so poor and a large part of the reason we struggled for the last 2 seasons.

Out of interest, how many “errors” has Aurier made under Jose’s football?

One of the main things driving any possible Aarons deal is that we're maxed out on non HG players with Hojbjerg joining. Same goes for Callum Wilson. We might be able to free up some spaces if Sissoko, Lamela, Foyth, Aurier get any takers, but as it stands we have to try to recruit some HGs. If we shift some of the afore-mentioned, we're in clover, but if we don't we're in the shit.

  1. Lloris
  2. Gazzaniga
  3. Foyth
  4. Aurier
  5. Alderweireld
  6. Sanchez
  7. Dier
  8. Davies
  9. Sissoko
  10. Ndombele
  11. Lo Celso
  12. Højbjerg
  13. Lucas
  14. Bergwijn
  15. Lamela

Who am I missing @Japhet ? My my count we can have one more non HG?

That said, Aarons is the most exciting RB link for me. He has areas for improvement but his ceiling is very high. Dani Alves territory, and he was no giant.

Gedson. Davies is OK in the EPL though.

We're not in the shit - and we never are otherwise we'd be disqualified each year.

We have Dele, Kane, Winks, Davies = 4 HG players.

This is now supplemented with Cirkin, White, Austin/Whiteman, Tanganga = 4 U21.

(...with Sessegnon, Parrot, Skipp & Clarke potentially all on loan.)

Although those 4 U21 don't count towards the quota, they do count towards the competitive squad number of 25.

With potentially Wilson/Brooks and Aarons coming in, everything is fine - more than fine in the HG/U21 stakes - and even if they didn't sign for us, we'd be fine.

Yep, people are really struggling to get their heads around this. Which is fair enough since we’re so used to having great first xi’s but average squads. Another part of the mentality shift that needs to happen.

I always forget Gedson. Nuts.

Intend to go by European rules as there’s no point having players who aren’t eligible for your second most important competition (maybe most important given we’re more likely to win it).

Davies is HG for PL.

Lamela we are trying to shift.

Aurier is going.

Foyth is going.

See above re

I think that's true of most people who are 5ft 6in...

What's mentally wrong with saying someone will be back up?

Basically, Jose is trying to get across that idea that it should be normal to have good players on the bench and throughout the squad. Not just starting. Because that’s what the big boys have. 2-3 great players in each position ready to go. But our fanbase seems to think we’re only allowed one good player in each position. So for example when we talk about strikers it’s “oh well he’s just gonna sit on the bench behind Kane” or wingers it’s “oh well he’s just gonna be back up to Sonny”. That’s not the way we need to think. Need to think of it as a strong squad not just the XI. Jose discussing Bergwijn when he was asked why he was on the bench explains it best.

They won't go if we don't get the right offers for them, which leaves us in a position where we can only sign HG. If we go and sign any non HG players now, any offers for those players mentioned wil plummet because we have to get rid (hence why I said if we shift them we're in clover and if we don't we're in the shit).

At our best under pochettino I think we had a pretty good squad including depth. 16/17 and 17/18 squads were both good enough throughout to win the title imo.
