Based on watching him at Spurs and Villarreal.
Lo Celso was also immense under Emery and im pretty sure he would be looking fantastic at Villa
If you're basing it off his time at Villarreal then I can see your point slightly more. But he's not done anything of note at Spurs tbh and Luiz has been brilliant for Villa.

I know Luiz is good player - but sorry, I want Veiga or Amrabat.
I dont think Luiz can play better than how he did end of last season.

Better than PEH maybe but not better than a fully fit Lo Celso under Ange system but different types of players, D.Luiz would play as a 6, Lo Celso is an 8.

But there’s literally no precedent on all Celso being better under that system, he’s played 45mins under ange in a pre season.

If we’re talking Villarreal form, maybe, there’s a player there that COULD be good under Ange, but it’s not just the system, it’s a different league, and different pace of play. Based on premier league minutes, Luiz would be the more reliable option as he’s shown he can do it in this league.

Lo Celso hasn’t had a full chance in the direct sort of system, so he MAY turn out to be better than Luiz, but there’s no evidence for me currently to say he IS better than Luiz.

Looking at all the parts, his importance in the Villa team and his long contract, this feels like it’s has a 99% chance of not happening, the 1% is only because there was a ton of reports that Emery wants Lo Celso, so player + money? But those kind of deals so rarely happen in English football

It probably is unlikely but 3 years left isn't long.

Yeah, but how much money would we be asking for?

Their fans player of the year last year. Reckon you’d need to bid 45m-60m to have a chance and just can’t see spurs having any interest at those levels. Personally not convinced he’s a great fit either but not to me!

Seems it looks like we can’t decide on whether to go for a 6 or an 8 if PEH goes.
Personally think an 8 is what we need which leads away from Luiz.

I’m a Vasco supporter here in Brazil (and so is Douglas), the team that build him. He is one monster of a player, and has a huge ceilling that is now beginning to materialize. If Guardiola had coached him for 2-3 years when City bought him, he would be one of the best CDMs in world football right now, but instead he was stuck with shit coaches for most of his career (Vasco was a mess when he became a pro, than Girona and shit coaches in Villa until Unay came). For me he is actually generational, even more than Andrey, the one from our youth that Chelsea recently bought and is being hyped all over media. Also, DG is really loyal (he is actually fanatic for Vasco like we fans) and a fantastic character, he would become a fan favourite in no time. Finally, he is miles ahead of Hojbjerg already, with good coaching and time he could easily reach Casemiro levels. Its a no brainer for me

PEH has more (much more) PL goals and assists (and ratio) than GLC despite the fact he plays deeper.

He also plays football on a regular basis, something which GLC hasn't managed since we signed him.

45 minutes in preseason friendly is not enough for me. Infact since the Betis season where he did well has he actually managed to complete more than 50% of games in a season? (genuine question)

People also forget how patchy he is, we have seen performances like the one against West Ham from him before, but he goes missing a lot.

If we sold Hoijberg this Summer, there will be very good clubs lining up to pay 30m plus imo. If we could sell GLC we would be lucky to get half that amount.

As from Douglas Luiz, he is a very good player, but he is a 6 and with us having Bentancur, Bissouma and Skipp we are pretty stacked in that area.

The only way I see this happening is if Emery desperately wants Lo Celso and we do some sort of swap deal as I don’t see why Villa would sell.

I remember telling people about 2/3 of the way through last season that Douglas Luiz was way better than all our midfielders bar Bentancur and Bissouma and that Villa had 5-6 players in their 11 I’d gladly take into ours and it was argued against heavily. It was the case then, not so much now as we have strengthened well this summer so far. Whether we need another 6 depends entirely on whether we’re playing with two DM’s and a 10 or 1 DM and two 8’s. If we’re doing the latter I’d keep Gio, if we’re doing the former then Luiz would be a great buy, especially as Bentancur is out for quite a while still. This deal is unlikely though even if they do want Gio, Douglas is one of their best players, they would be mad to sell him

It’ll be a 6 and 2x 8’s mate but good analysis, agree with it a lot.

Do you reckon once Bentancur is fit we will see Bissouma moved forward as an 8? Would be a terrible waste to not have them both in the 11. I think until Bentancur’s fit again we’re going to be walking a bit of a risky tightrope in that a Bissouma injury could really set us back and make our midfield flakey. Perhaps looking at an 8 to replace Hojbjerg we would be wise to look at someone that’s also defensively solid. Someone like Ismail Bennacer or Lorenzo Pellegrini would be the dream in that role I think. Douglas is not gonna happen IMO, Villa are ambitious and will look at us as one of their main competitors for European football

Ange said recently Bissouma can play both 6 and 8
