It’s actually what you’re supposed to do as a fullback, show them inside so they run into traffic instead of isolating you one on one.

His problem was that he was too slow out to harass him and he wasn’t backed up by the team pushing up. He’s the fullback pushing out and should have had one of the midfielders following to plug the space Willian in pushed into. Instead our lot remained stuck in the 6 yard box and didn’t back him. Watch the contrast with Chelsea when we got players wide, we had constant harassment whenever we got funnelled inside. That was a team backing each other up, intelligently working to fill gaps and squeeze us into tight spots with no outball.

We can do this, we know we can as we used to be the best at this, but all the training, drilling and previous experience just dribbled out of their ears.

Having said all that, I’m not going to take anything away from Chelsea here, they did everything we used to. I don’t care that they’ve been in a bad run, they played very well today and totally took us out of our game from minute 1.

Thats where we disagree. In these days of inverted wingers, or just in this occasion from a short corner, there's absolutely no chance I'm telling my full backs to show him inside on his strong foot. Into traffic or otherwise. I'd much rather the attacker be guided down the line on their weak foot and tell my covering defenders to get goal side and outside of the posts.

Different strokes I suppose.

Did we change shape at HT or just put Dirksen straight swap for dier so we could actually keep the ball?
We changed shape. We pretty much match them man for man in the second with Lucas playing as de facto LWB covering Azpilicueta's runs, and even though he was terrible there we defended better as a team. It allowed us to win the ball higher up the pitch and be more aggressive.

Alli, Kane and Son matched up with their three CBs. Then it was:

Azpilicueta ... Kante .... Kovacic ... Alonso
Lucas ...... Eriksen ..... Sissoko .... .Aurier

Mount ...... Abraham .....Willian
Vertonghen Alderweireld Sanchez

I still can't for the life of me work out what the hell Gazzaniga was thinking?! All he had to do was punch or catch the ball, we go in 0-1 at HT.

Although Rudiger's reaction was pathetic, Son did have a kick out and in today's game especially contact isn't what matters.

I guess now Eriksen got his set piece assist last week he won't beat the first man/wall for another year. Shocking. I cannot fathom why oh why Poch and Jose have stuck with him?

If anyone actually came out of today with any credit left, it was Ndombele for me. He seemed like the only one actually doing something near the end. Thought he was brought on far too late.

Finally, the racism and the throwing of things onthe pitch is a disgrace. I don't know if they were the same incident or separate, but either way I hope those involved are banned for life. No matter how bad it gets on the pitch there is zero need for any of it. Ashamed to be associated with them under the Tottenham banner. Horrible day all round for the club in several aspects.

Sanchez was decent the rest of the back four we awful. Goalkeeper absolutely shocking. Midfield what midfield embarrassing. Front four nonexistent.
Then to cap it all some animals racially abuse a player. What an absolutely dreadful day for the club on and off the pitch.

The Professional Footballers' Association has called for a government inquiry into racism in football after Chelsea's Premier League win at Tottenham was marred by alleged racist behaviour from the crowd.

Just seen this headline on BBC, how spursy to be the club that gets made an example of...... incoming points deduction????

Totally agree, not saying it would be wrong decision.

However, they have to be careful here, whats to stop rival fans posing as racist home fans in order to get a club punished?

It has to be the individual who gets punished, realistically what more can a club do.

this game showed that so much of what is wrong with the team is down to players and ownership not the manager.
the pathetic investment in the first team squad and its consequence is evident for all bar the BSofL.
Levy needs to hire a DofF with real power and authority and take a back seat himself.

Will an extremely rare and isolated incident, perpetrated by a few individual morons really trump decades and decades of antisemetic chanting and hissing from hundreds/thousands-at-a-time Chelsea and Spam scum? Let’s see now shall we!

It certainly should be the individuals that are prosecuted and not the club, which would be the fair and sensible way to proceed. However I wouldn’t trust the idiots at The FA, The Premier League or UEFA to actually make the right decision!

Oh come on nothing will happen to the club. They’ll be an enquiry but if they can’t find the proof then there’s little they can do. If it was only rudiger that heard it (I don’t know if it was only him) then it’s his word against everyone else’s.

I was at the game and heard nothing racist at all directed at any black players. They’ll be cameras everywhere though so if it did happen then the individual will be identified. The club will want to clear this up ASAP.

Can't argue too much with that. It's very clear to me that CM has to be the priority. We need to get the ball forward quicker and more intelligently. I though NDom looked to do this but in order to play him like this he needs a full on defensive machine along side him which we haven't got at all. I personally think we are at least 3 players short of a starting XI that will tick all the boxes. A RB, a DM, and a WF.

I appreciate what Jose is saying regarding the defensive side of the game. Him needing time to coach them properly to how he expects them to work as a unit, but if we are to be a more counter intuitive side we need to move the ball quicker through the middle third. It's too easy to just press the long ball from Alderwiereld, and that's our best attacking threat at the moment.

I suspect Jose knows this too. The thing which gives me a little bit of hope is, Jose is playing Dier out of necessity. He’s subbed him off twice in the first half now so he clearly thinks Dier is having a shocker. Dier is getting found out very quickly.

He doesn’t think Sissoko is a central midfielder. So again it must be out of necessity.

Winks is behind Dier and Sissoko in the pecking order. Which says it all for me and I’m glad Jose doesn’t rate him.

NDombele has been injured.

Now the question is who will Jose sign and will he be given funds? It is critical that we sign a DM. We
Will achieve absolutely nothing with those three wasters in CM. Dier is league one level nowadays. Sissoko is not good enough technically and winks is not good enough either. If any one of those continue to start in CM we are screwed.

Who on earth at spurs let it get this bad that our CM consists of Sissoko Dier and Winks? Was Poch genuinely happy with that?

Was just thinking the same. Thing that still baffles me though is what were we working on in training all week? We were so bad!

Thing is he didn’t train them all week. Was pictures in the papers of Kane in Lapland with his family on Wednesday. I assume he was there for More than just a day trip then guess the whole squad had Monday & Tuesday off and probably started training again on Wednesday.

i understand why players would have been given a couple of days off for RR. But on the other side of coin this is first clear week Jose would have had to work with the team since he took over would have thought he would have wanted to take advantage of that especially before such a big game.

The team were poor from beginning to end. We should have been up for given Fat Frank's comments. I doubt we will be releasing a dvd of this fixture.

And especially as we would have gone 4th if we had won. Oh well, there’s still a long way to go yet!

I simply cannot fathom the apparent lack of desire for especially the first half. How does that even happen? Where is the Jose effect

On the evidence of how we set up and played , I can't really see that another couple of days would have made any difference

everyone fears this but just has to push it to the back of their minds.

one thing is for sure if he thinks a midfield of Sissoko and Dier can control a game ahead of more technical players we are in trouble, any Spurs fan could have told him that midfield would struggle. Not because we're clever but because we've seen it.

Now he's seen it we should be OK.

Was ha asleep at Wolves then?

Jose just found out a good deal more about some of the characters and 'quality' in this squad....

Gazzaniga is a fool. As is Aurier. Both simply not good enough to play for a team aiming for Top 4 in the Premier League.

Rose and Vertonghen are past it. Time to dispose of both ASAP.

Dier appears incapable of finding his old form.... Not sure whether it's time to give up on him completely, or is there any possibility that he could improve in a different role? (Remember his first game for the club when he scored twice from right back....)

Eriksen... we've all said it many times before... If he doesn't want to play for the club then don't give him the shirt. Same for any player.

Either way, without reinforcements in January, this team are going to struggle to finish in the Top 6. It's a long shopping list and not sure whether we can obtain the necessary players by the start of next season under the current transfer regime.
  • Defensive Midfielder (it's been a major need for some time)
  • Play-making 10 (of the same quality as the 'old' Eriksen)
  • Right back
  • Goalkeeper (even when Lloris returns, it's obvious that he isn't the player/leader he once was)
We will almost certainly will need to get rid of some, if not all, of the deadwood first. Problem is that the value of those players is falling significantly with every game that passes.

I live in hope.
