At a very rough calculation based on Topspurs' transfer figures, I make it we had £40m-£50m in the kitty from the last two seasons' trading. As I doubt we're paying the £17m for Paulinho in one go, we've almost certainly got a very substantial chunk of that left, plus whatever we make from this window's outgoings, plus whatever the Dear Leader can conjure up from some creative accounting and the TV money. On that basis alone, I find this information less than entirely convincing.
However, it is also unlikely that we got all the money up front for sales in the last two seasons. Ergo, we don't necessarily have £40 m-£50m in the kitty.

Looking at it in the cold light of day, without bias. This is just one piece of ITK, I'm expecting another piece of ITK to counter it soon.

Surprised we haven't had anything already.

ITK really does seem to have slowed to a trickle this window.

Thing is the money we were prepared to spend on either mouts or damio should be available still plus whatever we would've made available anyway this summer plus however much extra tv money and sales we make, I don't think £50m should be out of the question

But we didn't have the money, we had £11m in the bank to last us for the year. If we had bought those players it would have been on the back of future earnings.

This year future earnings/expenditure might be totally different. I'm guessing higher from the tv deal and the fact that we are after more expensive players.

This is very risky though as we cannot tell what the future holds.

More than unlikely, simply put, we don't have it.

Madrid supposedly owe us a king's ransom still & it's pretty standard practice anyway.

Blimey, mate! Either you have some serious manlove for Jelavic, or you think we'd never in a million years go in for him. Either way you must have more money than sense.

Fancy lending me a tenner? ;)

If we sign him the £200 will be a parting gift as I'll give up on Spurs, and probably life.

Why are people talking as if we only have £15 million? I swear we went through this earlier.

Also someone even alluded to JJ's info about evaluating the value of each player and deal.

It's not as black and white with a club such as Spurs that we have a definitive amount... It's more likely to be we will be willing to invest if the potential benefits of a deal outweigh it's financial cost... E.g through the gaining of experience and boost in shirt sales (Villa) Or the potential to move them on in their peak for huge profits (Halilovic and Jedvaj). This is obviously all going to be within the guidelines of a loose budget.

You really think if the deal ticked all the boxes for us we wouldn't be able to find a couple of extra million 'over the forecasted budget'? (In relation to someone above saying about how could we afford 17 million for Croatian lads if we only had 15 million.)

It still amazes me how some people take every bit of ITK as given and therefore as the basis of their love or hatred for Spurs that day.

Imagine if there was no Internet. Less than 2 weeks into the transfer window and we've signed one of the best midfielders in one of the best teams in the world. If there was no Internet, we'd all be happy about that and hoping for a striker at some point. But because of the internet, a couple of days after the Paulinho transfer was announced, bundles of fans on here were slitting their wrists again because 2 Croats no-one had heard of might not be coming and a great footballer chose to stay in Spain rather than come to a non CL playing English team. All the Moany McMoanersons come out in full swing and shed fuckloads of negativity around the place.

It really isn't as bad as you'd think. At least wait until 10th August and not 10th July before panicking & moaning. Arsenal fans have a lot more to worry about at the moment because they've been promised superstars and as yet have no-one. We're not in the CL so are limited to a certain extent as to who we can get. Yet we've still managed Paulinho.

90% of ITK doesn't pan out, don't get so wound up by it. Keep calm & masturbate lots.

Or get wound up, but still masturbate lots!

Glad we're back and running and I wasn't on that list. Must admit I prefer discussions to arguments though. (y)

For my part, although disappointing, the 2 Croatian guys were for the future and we're never sure about how that'll pan out. Yep great, and I'm sure these guys could have been good, but only time will actually tell. We should have our own limits and if they exceeded it then fair enough, let's move on. There will always be more, it just indicates Spurs are now ready to explore these types of routes which is good.

There were some theories going around that we never actually made a bid on Moutinho, so...

Well if we're not getting the 2 croat babies, surely that means we have a extra £17mil to spend.........right? :cautious:

Levy/the committee might have put that money aside to spend on young potential players with big resale value rather than 1st team players who can come in and do a job straight away.

So this transfer window is following the traditional early optimism into mass suicide pattern. Just waiting for the takeover talk followed by the deadline day deal that doesn't happen.

Wrong. In theory I think there are two alternative pots. Current and development. Hopefully a couple of the more senior ITK's will confirm this. The Croats will probably have fallen into development.

Too much negativity around here tbh.

We will bring in a striker and we will have one hell of a squad this season.

A helluva squad.

Why do we have to always have the same discussion?

There is not actually a "war chest" - I.e. a big wooden box full of fucking doubloons - in the corner of Levy's office.

Players need to be paid money as this is their job. They do not do it for free. The better ones get lots of money. So do some bad ones. This means that buying a player is not just a case of taking some of the imaginary doubloons out of the imaginary chest and then counting what is left.

Also, different players being paid different amounts of money means that sometimes we have to get them off the wage bill before we spunk another 5 years of "only" £120k per week and end up paying two players for the same slot in the team. The alternative version of this policy is known as "doing a Leeds" and ends badly.

That is all.
