dembele is a player i admire but it just smacks of being cheap.

I think it's more the fact we won't have a pants pulled down over a deal for Moutinho and that Dembele is a class act who will prove much more affordable both in terms of transfer fee and salary.

It smacks of being sensible to me!

I think 'the reasons that will come apparent' are the fact that when the ITK was flying around freely, we managed to sign fucking nobody and Chelsea started signing our 'say-no-more, nudge-and-a-wink' mega talents.

DL: 'Why is Oscar's name all over twitter and why have I just got a text from Roman Abramavich of a winking smiley?'
Minion: 'Dunno boss'
DL: 'You fucking quacked didn't you? Up the West End last night were you? Jabba jabba, loose lips, quaffing with the agents and the perma tans were you? Huh?'
Minion: 'Can't remember boss, I was hula-d on champop...'
DL: 'Jesus, man! You're grounded until August 18th MINIMUM, maybe the 31st. Now go and sweep out the new training ground.'
Minion: 'But i've got golf in a bit...'
DL: 'I said DO IT! THIS IS LOCKDOWN.'

I see what you mean, you're selling your best midfielder for 35 odd million and bringing in another midfielder for 10 or so million - it doesn't smack of ambition but if we are spending and improving in other areas it puts a different light on it. In fact it be could very shrewd.

I think Dembele in beside Sandro could be immense.

And he's a very decent keeper. Will be a fair bit cheaper than Lloris is looking to cost. Not sure if he's a huge step-up from Brad but he's tall, is a strong keeper in most depts and crucially, isn't eligable for a winter fuel allowance.

A step down from both Brad and Heurelho, I'd say. (I saw quite a bit of him with Ajax, and we were supposed to have checked him out four years ago and found him wanting.) And why do Roma want shot of him after a season? How many of the 54 goals they conceded last year went past him, I wonder?

my guess is that its another vdv-esque deal, good player for extremely cheap and if it were leaked other clubs would come sniffing around

They aren't apparent yet, I'm expecting the reasons that will become apparent will become apparent soon.

Joe Allen would be a much better fit in terms of trying to replicate what Modric provides for our system but then I can definitely see the virtue of pursuing a player like Dembele who has all the attributes to push on and achieve things at a higher level - its just slightly harder to fit him in to our system.

Just to add a balance, in fairness to Steklenberg, Roma`s defence was utter shite last season.

I would rather Dembele, has demonstrated a bit of everything since moving into midfield for Fulham.

Great quality on the ball and can glide past players with ease. That's one of the things I think we lacked under Harry...not enough driving forward from central areas of the pitch that disrupts the oppositions shape and can create more room for others. Too many times last season the opposition were able to sit deep and defend relatively comfortably.

I've watched Dembele closely and his ability to surge forward like that could be a real weapon for us in terms of creating that space for the likes of Bale, VDV etc.

His physical presence and appetite for the tackle is impressive to. In a midfield three I think he could be the business for us.

Don't think we need to replace Modric with a vastly inferior player albeit who's more similar.

Dembele could be amazing for us. His surging dribbles from midfield are probably the best in the league, he has a good touch, decent work rate and passes well.

Would be over the moon with him and Sandro in midfield with Sig or Rafa in front.

Indeed. Am I becoming forgetful in my old age or did we not plump for Gomes and it was between the two a few years back? Of course, it could be said we might have chosen the wrong keeper. I dunno. Stekelenburg (no need for that name either, far too long to keep typing out) always seems solid enough when playing for Dutchland but that's a different beast.

Really?

Stek was immense when he wasn't injured or suspended. Same situation as Lloris; the defense in front of him was shocking. In Stekelenburg's case probably worse. Kjaer and Jose Angel are unbelievably shit.

Also seems that AVB want his team to press the opponents high up the pitch, and for that to succeed you need all to apply the pressure, not just some (see Barcelona when they lose possesion).

Dembele work hard and as stats showed had the second highest tackle count, and had the highest success rate among the top tacklers with his 75%, so think he would fit in very well.
