He's had four seasons since 99-00 in which he's played more than 20 games. Go figure.

well they said a strain and coming days which sounds to me like they will wait and see, it could just be a short term set back...hopefully.

Fingers crossed it just is that, I really hope he gets another chance...

It sounds like its a minor strain (considering the guy was still on the pitch and not limping) which is natural when you return to action at that intensity after so long out.

Don't be too quick to write him off.

Not writing him off, just saying that if it's the same groin, it could be a bit of a worry, as that's been the reason he was out for over a year. Also seems very strange for the club to post that story up with a game not until Tuesday, and saying they will be monitoring it.

Loads of doomongers on here!

It would be a surprise if he didn't have some sort of strain after coming on last night. Gallas and VDV are never without a strain somewhere or another.

He's been out for God knows how long and it is only to be expected. Hopefully it will just be a minor thing and he will be back at least training within a week or so.

Completely agree. We see this with Ledley all the time. He comes back after a period out, picks up a minor strain as his body gets used to the stresses of playing again and then returns again after a couple of weeks.

Let's hope it is that anyway...

He will be given pre season to prove himself. If he breaks down in pre season then his time is up

If woody had known it was serious again, and he would know, I don't think he would have made those comments post game. He shouldn't really have played against Milan but needs must. I think it will just be a strain as he's been out for so long.

That's his left groin. Dunno what one was playing up before.

Grade 1 (which it almost certainly is) means 2 weeks out. VDV's calf recently was also a grade 1 strain which is why he came back so quickly and also why HR took him off Tuesday.

IF it's the same groin it could be more sinister, we have to just hope it's a new injury that isn't very serious and is the result of the body reacting to the stresses it's been placed under after such a long time.

Does anyone else think it was almost worth paying his years wages just for that 20 minutes?

It was one of the biggest games in our history and we were under enormous pressure, and we were able to bring on a highly experienced world-class player to marshal the defence and shut the door.

He will be given pre season to prove himself. If he breaks down in pre season then his time is up

He's out of contract this summer. We'll have to give him a new deal sooner, rather than later. A 1+1 on reduced wages would seem sensible.

Agree - his post game interview was very positive about being back fit again. Just a small twinge I expect.

Just give him a basic wage, with a big appearance fee clause.

Surely he's more sensible in real life to accept as opposed to Football Manager where his agent finds it funny.

I seriously doubt we would have conceded a goal had Bassong come on instead. So no i don't think it was almost worth paying his wages for a year.

This is a pretty comprehensive explanation of his injury problems. It appears the injury in Milan is unrelated to his previous one....

Jonathan Woodgate's new injury woe after brief encounter

Barely hours after Jonathan Woodgate declared himself ready to fight for a first-team place at Tottenham this season, the club confirmed his latest injury setback after a scan revealed a groin strain in his left leg.
Standard Sport understands the problem is not directly related to that which has required a series of operations and threatened the 30-year-old's career but is a consequence of his appearance in Spurs' 1-0 Champions League last-16, first-leg victory against AC Milan.

That 30-minute outing was his first involvement since November 2009 and Woodgate had hoped it would be the catalyst for more regular involvement having made only 65 appearances since arriving for £8million from Middlesbrough three years ago.

Although his latest adductor muscle injury is not thought to be serious - his recovery time will be "weeks and not months" - questions will again be asked over the centre-back's ability to play consistently at the highest level.

Woodgate is, however, used to such pessimism and just before finding out the news of his setback, he was bullish over his future at White Hart Lane and revealed why he turned down a loan move to Wolves in last month's transfer window.

He said: "I feel I can get fit enough to play regularly this season - that's why I stayed, to show some loyalty. I didn't see the point of going on loan, no disrespect to Wolves. They have a good team with a top manager but I want to stay and crack it here with Champions League football and get my chance.

"It's a great to be back in the changing room again. Its brilliant and I love being with the lads again. You never give up - a lot of people said I would never get back but you keep on fighting. Comments always spur you on when people say you can't come back.

"You keep going and you prove those people wrong and you prove those people right who say you will come back. There have been a lot of tough days but at the end of the day it is only you who can get on with it. You have got to stay mentally strong and wait for your chance."

Woodgate's defiance in a bid to extend a career that has taken him from Leeds to Newcastle and Real Madrid will doubtlessly continue despite this latest hindrance.
After travelling to the United States out of his own pocket to visit specialists, he then also financed a trip to Australia, where he underwent double conjoint tendon reconstruction and partial adductor tenotomies surgery - essentially, Woodgate had the tendons in his leg cut and reconstructed.

He saw a London-based specialist to further his rehabilitation with a course of drugs used to treat bone pain and the inflammation of the pubic bone.
One of the side-effects of the drug is a flu-like symptom which affected Woodgate for several days before he was able to begin light training.
"A lot of people with an opinion said I wouldn't play but you take it with a pinch of salt," said Woodgate. "I am determined to get fit - I won't let anyone say I can't get fit. These are the things that you have to do if you want to play football again and you have to be mentally tough.
"I had injections. They inject it in your arm and it goes all around your body. The operation work just didn't quite get me over the finishing line, so the injections did."

This latest setback lengthens what has been a painful and long road to recovery for Woodgate - but he is admirably determined to ensure he will complete the journey.
