or announcing it like this will just lead to us and City increasing our offers?

Can't beleive we screwed this transfer up so royally - he was at the bloody Wembley cup as a guesat of the club. Transfer was proceeding well and suddenly he's gone to bloody Villa - talk about dropping the ball!

How did not signing Ashley Young "bite us" - unless you're saying that it is Tottenham's obligation to sign every promising English player in the market?

He was a good player whom we let go to another club when they outbid us and then he developed into a better player. You may as well say that not signing Rooney when he moved from Everton to Man U "bit us". Or, for that matter, that Villa let us "bite them" when we signed Luka Modric last Summer.

We can't sign all of the good players, you know.

That's different. We were in negotiations to sign Ashley Young but we decided not to pay £9m for him back then and i'm sure Levy regrets that. Now we want to sign but we can't because he's so overpriced. With Rooney we knew we didn't have the chance to sign him and as for Modric Villa didn't attempt to sign him AFAIK. So you can't say that "bit us" and that "bit them"

I'm not saying we should sign all good playesr (although all signings we make should be good players) but we were in negotiations to sign Delph (that's from the fact that he was at the Wembley cup) but negotiations didn't go to plan.

I still stand by that the £9.75m rising to £12.5m that was mooted and eventually paid by Villa, at the time, was not a good deal. It was a big risk and we had Aaron Lennon who is 2 years younger, can a team really accomodate two small wingers? I don't know any that do. Anyway he was said to be a forward then and we had Defoe at the time.

Nobody expected Young to be such a huge success and it wasn't worth the risk at the time. Delph has progressed fantastically at Leeds and to be honest he is better off at Villa. He will get alot of games there while at WHL he has to compete with Wilson, JJ, O'hara, Hudd and then youngsters like Livermore, Bostock, and Parrett..

We need a CM but we need an older head with proven ability, Delph would have been a bench player or loaned out to be honest he has made the best decision for himself really and Im not too heartbroken, Bostock and Livermore both look great prospects

there were a mixture of things. Delpha nd us and Delphs agent certainly had contact (i don't knwo if he was at WHL or not) but i heard that other dealsing between us a villa most notably regarding JJ meant we had room and Villa did not for Delph. HOw and why the JJ interest changed last week i have no idea but it's looking like we keep JJ and Villa came back in for Delph. I said in the transfer forum that i beleive Delph made a good choice given the current players at both clubs.

Villa represent his best chance of playing first team football from day one for him and so surely it's an honorable and football related decsion on his part to want to join them.

Absolutely.

If Delph turns out to be everything his fans claim, then he will definitely be one that got away.

However, if MON promised him some first team football and he is signing for Villa for football, rather than financial, reasons then it is an honourable decision. Kudos to Fabian Delph.

We could've bought him then loaned him out to Villa.

(Wishful thinking, I know!)

Talk about adding 2 + 2 and getting 6,735. What transfer? Screwed up how?

We scouted him, we hosted him, we negotiated with him and then we possibly submitted a bid for what we thought he was worth.

He's signing somewhere else. Happens every day. From where I stand, it looks as if Tottenham weren't really that desperate to sign him.

The fact that he visited the club is just part of the initial mutual scouting process. People read far too much into it. For instance, I saw posts the other day wondering how we were "permitted to talk to him" if the clubs hadn't already agreed terms. It's not as if young players are in seclusion. They can visit whatever clubs they want to visit, provided the signing club doesn't try to enter into contractual negotiations without the owning club's permission.

The same applies to your post. You have concluded that we were going all-out to sign this player, based on ... what? The fact that he watched one of our games.

Reading between the lines, Leeds wouldn't sell to us even though we matched Villa's offer, fair enough. Probably the right club for him, massive hole in their midfield now Barry has gone, tiny squad, and great coach.

I think Zidane was a bigger regret then Ashley "all hype" Young.

Crikey, some people think we better throw the towel in now because we've failed to sign a League 1 player who if we're being honest most of us had never heard of 6 months ago.

Some people need a real sense of reality.

What a twat Ken bates is.
He hates us, OK, but his club are in a dire financial state and for the sake of a week he could have got more money from Man City.
That may not have been good for Delph but it certainly would have been better for Leeds.
I don't buy all this "honourable club" stuff he's coming out with either I just reckon he's using the Delph money to pay off his latest lawsuit.
