What power do we fans really have?

After another lacklustre game (being very polite) in which we managed to muster 0 shots on target against a team whose confidence has been shot to pieces in recent weeks, I think there are a lot of people who are now coming to the realisation that something drastic needs to change at the club. Have things been worse over the past 30 years? Most definitely. However, these have been the two most boring years of football I can remember watching and I don't think I'm alone in believing that the responsibility for what we're now witnessing needs to fall upon those that run the club. In my opinion, they have no accountability, even though they are surely the people who should be held most accountable. I'm not a short-sighted Levy hater - I can acknowledge all of the good he has done to ensure the financial stability of the club and how we have made undoubted progress during ENIC's tenure. In fact, that makes it all the more frustrating because we have had a great platform to build on, to really push on and challenge for the league, but we have been allowed to stagnate badly and now seem to me to be in a real mess with no distinct identity or plan. I'm very aware that you have to be extremely careful what you wish for - I'm not even saying it has to be ENIC out but they have to start being accountable for their lack of action and ambition. First and foremost we are a football team and that do not seem to be their priority at all.

This is really a place where I thought people might be able to help me answer the question of just what power we, as fans, hold. Do we actually possess any power at all in helping to decide the future of our club or are we pretty much insignificant? It certainly feels like the club could exist without us now, such are the revenue streams from TV, stadium events, merchandise etc., and that is quite a depressing thought. You might disagree that the buck stops with Levy and ENIC, and I'm certainly not going to tell you that your opinion is any less relevant than mine, but they have been the constant throughout the failure to address huge holes in the squad that have existed for years, through hiring and firing Mourinho (a coach with world-class pedigree but a soul-sappingly boring approach to football), and then promising a return to our 'attacking DNA' before hiring an even more defence-minded coach whose Wolves side were renowned for never scoring a goal in the first half of games. For me, there's nowhere else to look now. We could hire Poch again in the future (a man who had lost his way badly towards the end of his reign, as much as I love him and what he did for us) but he'd still be hamstrung by an ownership that has never shown any sign of changing its ways.

As a season ticket holder, I acknowledge that I'm part of the 'problem' because I willingly hand over my money every year, even though I fundamentally disagree with how the club is now run. I know that if I make a stand by not going to a game then I'm only hurting myself because they've already got my money. Similarly, I know if I don't renew my season ticket there'll be a queue of people willing to take it. Like thousands of others, those aren't options I'd want to consider as I love the club and I (used to) look forward to watching us play. For every single fan - watching at the ground, watching at home, completely disinterested at the moment - we have an emotional investment in Spurs and it would be good to feel that we had some element of control, seeing as we are supposedly 'the heartbeat of the club'.

So, what can we do? Is there anything you are currently doing in order to try and affect change at the club? One person won't make a difference but enough of us together might. Do we coordinate a mass stay away for a game so Levy might start to get the message? Do we go to games but not spend a penny at the stadium? Do we try and organise protests to get a message across? Who actually has the power to make those at the top of the club start listening because it feels at the moment like they are blissfully happy raking in our money every week and settling for mediocrity on the football pitch. Any thoughts on where we are now - how do you think things could be turned around so that actually going to watch us play is a more enjoyable experience? Or am I just a miserable bastard who needs to cheer the fuck up? I'll be honest, it does feel like that sometimes :playful: It just seems like if that's the case then there are quite a few of us around these days.

The only thing ENIC care about is money so the only way to affect change is to hit them in the pocket.

The problem is that they know that however bad things get, fans will still turn up to support their team. It's called inelasticity of demand and it means they can get away with shit they never would be able to in any other industry. In fact, if this was any other industry they would have gone out of business long ago.

Imagine being charged top dollar for an inferior product in any other situation, you would just take your business elsewhere. These pricks know that will never happen so bleed the fans dry as a result. Happy days.

I don’t go to games a couple of times a year like i used to.
I don’t spend money on merch/subscriptions etc (been a while since i did that anyway).
I stay away from watching games on tv.

won’t change anything but my life quality has improved.

(i’ll be back, but need a break from this circus)

I think our fans underestimate how quickly we could get rid of Enic if we really wanted too.
Definitely. Their valuation of the club is huge and I can’t see anyone paying it because there’s no upside in terms of value from there. It makes their power even more absolute

I completely get it. My interest has declined hugely. Harry Kane typifies all that I feel is wrong now - a multi-millionaire who couldn’t give a shit, employed by billionaires who talk a good game but couldn’t really give a shit. And we are the mugs who are funding it

You have no power unless a lot of you are actually willing to put your hands in your pockets.

The problem is that all of you who say ENIC our are all mouth, no trousers. If you want to take control you need to buy a 36% stake in the club from ENIC and all of the smaller shareholders on board.

Failing that, unless you can identify someone or a group with the resources and inclination to do so and the time to sell them on the idea then things will remain as they are.

I asked for that ?

I read it mate. Feel your pain. Bottom line is management. As fans we can continue to complain but you run the risk of being viewed as a negative nancy. i just hope for a coup to bounce Levy although it’s extremely unlikely even though on field results warrant it. Most of his major moves in the last few years have tuned to shit and here we are. Blame is on him 100%.

Cheers…

What absolutely amazes me is there are so many people on here and elsewhere who actually defend and support our owners, why?
I remember years ago talking to a Spurs fan and we were discussing owners. This was pre City, and I said well of course Abramavich is the best owner he's transformed Chelsea. And he looked at me as if I was crazy, and goes no, no, no, I prefer our owners
I didn't say he was the dumb one, but I thought it.
Year in year out since then Chelsea continue to leave us in the dust l. No doubt in my mind who has the best owner out of us and Chelsea, and it's not us
To echo the words of Oliver Cromwell, I say to ENIC
In the name of God, go
But of course they won't, because who will pay their price?
Just us fans in sadness and mediocrity

but ultimately all everyone at every club wants is mega millionaire sugar daddy they aren't that many of them around are there - what happens of the pitch I don't really care abut if I'm honest a couple of seasons ago under ENIC we had a very good team a very good manager and we went to a European Cup final we weren't jumping up and down then calling them to go - of course they have made mistakes and I am not defending them but what are the options

If enough noise is made fans can make a difference.

Fans helped to cause the club to reverse the furlough decision, fans and gov bodies etc helped to stop the ESL, fans veto’d Gattuso hire.

I can come back to life.

I turn on a match, and shortly after a bit of time I’ve lost hope, and die inside.

Then the match ends and I return to life.

So we can also add time travel to that.
