He really was fine today.

You don't create that many chances without someone having a good game!
Even Pardew seemed to recognise that they'd got lucky.
So frustrating that it feels like it's always us that runs into these daft games.

If people watch the game again when they have calmed down, then we actually linked up well in places, that isn't to say we didn't dawdle on the ball at times but there was far more one touch stuff going on and more cutting inventive passes.
The problem is that we have set our CL blinkers to maximum, bought a shed load of players and when we lose, it gets the spotlight treatment.
That doesn't excuse AVB for his quite frankly baffling selections, too much fucking football theory over what is laid out in front of his eyes.. he will have to act sharpish, again, i do fear that a tide on him is turning though.

Friedel 7 - Maybe Llrois would have stopped that goal, but he's one of the best around, but Friedel made some decent saves in the match and it was a superb goal by Remy

Walker 6 - Offered very little but weren't bad at the back

Dawson 6 - Poor first half and Remy was making runs for fun, we could have been 2 down. Solid second half

Chic - 6 - Saved our bacon with a great challenge

Kaboul - 7 - Solid as a rock and great on the ball

Vertonghen - 8 - Great defensively I thought and he got forward well. Put in some good balls but no one really got on the end of them

Townsend - 4 - Poor game, plenty of running but no end product. Soldado was so frustrated with him he knew he wasn't going to get a cross or on the end of a rebound.

Eriksen - 7 - Tried to get the ball forward, had to drop deep at times to work things. A wonder cross for Soldado but Soldado didn't expect that ball due to having no crosses all that half from Townsend

Dembele - 3 - Very poor, Sandro had a mare a few weeks ago but Dembele was even worse. Trying to show his strength and recovery skills rather than play it simple. For me it cost us that goal

Paulinho - 5 - A lot of running and a couple of shots but didn't do enough for me

Sandro - 8 - Rock solid. AVB should know he should start every match. No brainer

Siggy - 4 - Very poor game from him

Soldado - 6 - Great movement and unlucky not to score. Starved of service again

Defoe - 2 - He normally has a chance to score but I can't really remember him doing anything apart from be offside

If Krul didn't play a blinder maybe the ratings would have been higher.

AVB not playing Lamela after a terrific game was absurd, not even to feature when we were bombarding Krul's goal. Huge error and for me it may have cost us 1-3 points

friedel - was very flappy early on. could still be a decent keeper in a normal system, high line kills him. today was a glimpse into a future without hugo in goal

walker - for the fastest guy on the pitch, he ain't half slow sometimes. first half we needed urgency and he'd stop the ball dead all of the time, offeredn an outlet 2nd half and didn't do much wrong defensively

dawson - a pretty standard dawson performance

chiriches - was our biggest attacking threat at one point, lovely on the ball, perhaps partially at fault for the goal though

vertonghen - battled and whipped in crosses

dembele - i'm a fan but he had a poor game, people will exagerate it though as he was the one to make way at half time

paulinho - just as bad as dembele but with a piss weak attempt of a tackle which cost us the goal thrown in. i took a lot of stick for not understanding the hype around this guy and i still stand by that, he pops up in the box now and then but given his 1 in 11 goal return he's not even doing a great job of that. games pass him by, he has little ability on the ball when under pressure, missed a fairly simple chance. he's fortunate he's brazilian

townsend - a lot of crap but like it or not, he was still at the heart of most of the openings we created

eriksen - nowhere near as bad as alan smith would have you believe, should've scored, had a couple of crappy corners but like townsend was central to anything good we did going forward

sigurdsson - i can't remember him doing much other than the free kick and blazing a shot over the bar

soldado - a bit more involved than usual, some nice touches, might've scored. was ok

sandro - was excellent, should've started

kaboul - did well, should've scored though

defoe - did nothing in the little time he was on(which was predictable)

6 - Friedel - He didn't have much to do really and the goal wasn't his fault.
6 - Walker - Didn't have a terrible game and made some decent runs. Wish he would improve his final delivery though.
6 - Dawson - got rinsed once by Remy but otherwise solid in defence. Distribution hasn't been as good as in other games.
7 - Chiriches - I rate this guy. Covered for Dawson when he was skinned and is a good player on the ball. He could be a fantastic buy for us.
Vertonghen - Had a decent game. Crossing wasn't that good but did other things well.
3 - Paulinho - His cowardice when making the challenge cost us a goal. His defensive work is poor and his passing, creativity or goalscoring isn't very good either. Just seems like a Brazilian Jenas to me on current form.
3 - Dembele - His dawdling on the ball brought on unnecessary pressure which led to the goal. poor defensive work and his passing is quite poor. Right to be subbed at half time.
5 - Townsend. His confidence at running at people is encouraging but he needs to stop shooting and needs to work on his passing. IMO would benefit from switching to the left wing.
5 - Eriksen. His general play is ok and suffers from a lack of movement but it isn't working for him at the moment.
5- Sigurdsson. Didn't do much wrong but he shouldn't play on the left. Ineffectual.
6- Soldado Works hard and his link up play is underrated. Eriksen played a great ball in which he didn't get onto the end of which wasn't great and that is his game and could have done better in certain situations but I think it is harsh to start calling him a flop when you don't play to his strengths.

6- Kaboul Didn't do much wrong really.
8- Sandro Came on and we immediately looked better. Great at his job and was decent on the ball as well.
4 - Defoe. It isn't his fault that he was brought on but I don't think he is good enough for us anymore. His link up play is poor and he doesn't contribute anything else of note.

I thought we were outfought in midfield in the first half and our goal threat is worrying. Our attacking midfielders aren't doing the business and our slow tempo is really hampering us. AVB is starting to worry me but we have to back up to at least the end of the season.

Friedel; 6 Slow to come out and indecision/flapping from/at set pieces caused defence to panic a few times

Walker; 6 Meh, some good some brainless.

Dawson; 7 Few times the striker ran in behind him but that was more the CMs' fault with so much space there due to the false no. 9 Paulinho.

Chiriches; 6.5 a few risks as usual and went off for what? a bloody nose!

Vertonghen 6.5 some decent play but some can't be bothered play too.

Townsend; 6 Mr predictable made bad decisions all day, ran up blind alleys and played passes to late too early or just badly. Touch also was lacking.

Paulinho; 5 First half was atrocious, went missing in CM, usually leaving Dembele alone whilst he jogged back from his support striker role, not sure what he brings to the team, except slow and deliberate box to box play. Improved when Sandro was on but again best work in attacking positions

Dembele; 4 Woeful in possession, caught in dangerous areas, and although he lacked support from his CM partner just looked sluggish and well off the pace.

Siggurdson; 4 To say he was weak is being kind, at one point Walker played an inch perfect through ball to him running through on the right, and he was so weak he just escorted it out for a goal kick (maybe the defender blew on him a bit)

Eriksen; 5 looks severely lacking in confidence, still showing for the ball, but set plays were poor and should have scored. seems to be just trying not to do anything wrong, which isn't making for incisive or creative play you want from a No. 10.

Soldado; 7 Actually started most of our good moves off with clever first time passes or flicks, and his dummy in the box should have led to Eriksen scoring, also unlucky with a clever looping header.

Subs.

Sandro; 8 again a match changing impact (in all but score :( ) got the crowd up with his prowling and starting things moving quicker than Dembele/Paulinho.

Kaboul; 7 Solid and brought the ball forward well although with little joy.

Defoe; 3.5 absolutely nothing, oh but had the time to have an argument on the pitch with Vertonghen (cause that helped the atmosphere...)

AVB; 5 Why play Dembele on Thursday then again today? Cost us a sub which could have been used to take off Townsend or Eriksen for Lamela or Holtby. And again the Defoe sub was a waste. Although his hands were tied slightly by Chiriches coming off for god knows what.

AVB has to take a long hard look at himself today. The keeper had a blinder, some of our finishing was poor and we didn't get the luck of the bounce at all but that shouldn't obscure the Defoe substitution. I can't blame Defoe anymore - he is what he is and we've seen him enough to know what he is. Problem is AVB seemingly isn't seeing it and that is a massive worry.

We were camped in their half, all the momentum was our way and despite the keeper heroics I thought it was inevitable we'd score at least once. They couldn't clear their lines and we were in complete dominance. After Thursday Lamela was the obvious sub for Siggy, we'd still keep our shape and have a ball hungry and creative talent stretching them even more. Bringing on Defoe changed that, yes we still created the odd chance but we lost our shape and our dominance and the pressure eased on Newcastle.

I'm starting to question AVB and I bet I'm not the only one.

Friedel 6 - Did well, but is certainly no Lloris
Walker 6 - Did well.
Dawson 6 - Once we have our left back back, he wont be playing. Did okay.
Chiriches 7 - Tried to go forward
Vertonghen 7 - Good shift
Paulinho 6 - Unlucky not to score, general play a bit sub par
Dembele 3 - I don't want him starting a game again. Not sure if it is him or AVB's tactics, but its a no no from me.
Sigurdsson 3 - Did he even play?
Eriksen 7 - Still has lot left in his locker and needs some confidence to unlock it. Corners and free kicks were awful.
Soldado 6 - Did well with the chances he got, probably surprised he actually got them.
Townsend 2 - Waste of space, needs to be demoted to the bench pronto.

Sandro 8 - Why didn't he start
Kaboul 6 - Did well, needs games under his belt to get back to his former self.
Defoe 1 - Needs to leave club, a great servant yes, but needs to go fast.

AVB 5 - Okay, shit starting line up, made the right choices at half time despite being forced with one and got the team playing much better second half, but what the fuck was the Defoe substitution about? Seriously, it was a fucking waste and Townsend or Siggy were screaming to be subbed by Lamela.

Bale exposed just how bad all the other attacking options were last season. And AVB leaves Lamella on the bench. Our attack is so ineffective that an attacking trio of Pav, Zokora and Freund would not do worse.

Friedel - 6
Walker - 7
Dawson - 6
Chiriches - 7
Vertonghen - 7.5
Townsend - 4 He's a tunnel visioned one trick pony and as selfish as Defoe
Paulinho - 5 knackered
Dembele - 4 wh'appen?
Siggurdsson - 4 The doubts everyone has ever had about him are beig manifested on a weekly basis. He must have some dirt on AVB or DL. I can see no other reason for him starting nearly every game
Eriksen - 4.5 Too lightweight for EPL, loan him out.
Soldado - 4 Was he playing? 'He came from Sunny Spain, to hide at White Hart Lane?
Subs:
Sandro - 7.5
Kaboul - 7
Defoe - 4 as per Townsend
AVB - 3 looking generous and Big Martin Jol will soon be looking for a new job:LOL:

I don't know what this guy's remit is supposed to be. His all round play has left me cold.

AVB sometimes seems the most tactically inept manager in the league. How can he justify leaving Lamela unused and sticking with largely the same 11 who have continuously produced uninspiring performances. He needs to reflect as we're going to stay drifting from the pack with a hard few fixtures coming up.
I only caught glimpses of the first half and the movement going forward seemed good from us but defensively we were woeful.

Friedel 6 had a feeling Lloris would have saved
Walker 7 defended and attacked well.
Dawson 6 got caught for pace.
Chiriches 6 ok.
Vertonghen 7 good
Sigurdsson 5 poor
Paulinho 6 seemed just off the pace wasn't strong enough in the tackle and Newcastle broke away to score.
Dembele 4 poor.
Townsend 6 ok kept positive
Eriksen 7 he made mistakes but found good areas to play his football must start more often
Soldado 4 sorry but again failed to impose his play does not look a 26M player

We played ok had many chances but again could not score

Sandro 7 very good bossed the show
Kaboul 6 good
Defoe 4 did he touch the ball to many of our strikers goal hanging waiting for the perfect play.

AVB not scoring don't look like scoring.
